Billy Ray "Bill" Buchanan passed peacefully from this world on Tuesday September 9th, just one week before his 95th birthday. Born on September 16, 1930, to Tom and Carrie Buchanan, Bill was a devoted husband to Jackie for 53 years, and a loving father to Jim (Ann) and Kim (Eddie) Marrocco. A few years after Jackie's passing, Bill married Evelyn, and the two of them spent 17 lovely years together.
Bill was hard-working and dedicated. After a stint in the Navy, beginning in 1948, he spent the majority of his adult life working in the construction industry. He always very proudly pointed out projects he helped with as he drove through Jackson and surrounding counties. He had a reputation as a skilled builder, and after his official retirement, he was much sought after for completing home projects for neighbors and family. Despite his many responsibilities with work, Bill always allowed quality time for his family, because they were so important to him.
Bill was preceded in death by Jackie, Evelyn, his parents; brothers, Don, Dan, Joe, and Jack; as well as sisters, Lula, Helen, and Carolyn. He is survived by his brother Tommy (Gail); son and daughter, Jim and Kim; and his three grandchildren, Carrie, Adam, and Caleb. He loved all his family immensely!
Bill's faith was also a powerful force for him. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served in many official capacities throughout the years, including as a deacon.
Bill has concluded his earthly journey, but his family and friends are comforted by knowing that it was marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. We will remember him not for the way his life ended, but for how it was lived.
The family will receive friends at Appalachian Funeral Services in Sylva, NC on Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 2pm with a funeral to follow at 3pm. Burial will take place at Old Savannah Cemetery.
