Billy Wayne Mikel

Billy Wayne Mikel, age 75, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2025, surrounded by family in his hometown of Fort Walton Beach. Born on September 29, 1949, Billy was the son of Arthur and Frances Mikel. He was a graduate of Choctawhatchee High School, The University of Southern Mississippi, and The University of West Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Susan, of 55 years; his daughters, Katie (John) and Allison (Chris); grandchildren, Ashleigh and Emma; step-grandchildren, Karen (Logan), Katie, and Nic (Lexie); sisters, Janie, Trisha, Linda, and Cindy (Bobby); brother, Bobby (Mary); nieces and nephews Kim (Keith), Jonathan (Josie), Alisha, Mikel (Mary Claire), Sarah (Ryan), BJ (Emily), Josh (Jess), Travis (Rainey), Zak (Brittany), along with many great nieces and nephews.
While at USM, he set many records as a standout football player, many of which are still held today. Upon graduation, he returned to Fort Walton Beach, where he dedicated many years to inspiring athletes and students in Okaloosa County. He was inducted into the USM Sports Hall of Fame in 1984, the Choctaw Hall of Fame in 2013, and the All Sports Association Hall of Fame in 2018.
In retirement, Billy spent his time volunteering as a Mentor and Grand Reader at Plew Elementary. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching his granddaughters grow up. Billy's love, passion, and dedication to others will never be forgotten. He inspired many and was loved by all.
