Billy F. Mitchell of Lubbock went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday April 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Billy was born on November 22, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas, to the late P.C. and Mary (Jenkins) Mitchell.
He grew up on the family farm and attended Frenship schools in Wolfforth graduating with the senior class of 1955. He attended Texas Tech briefly and served in the Naval Reserves. After working as a welder, and as driver for Bell Dairy, he followed in his dad’s footsteps as a farmer. After decades in agriculture, he stepped away in the 80’s and became a contractor doing highway maintenance work all over the state of Texas until his retirement.
He married the love of his life, Elaine (Smith) Ward, on September 25, 1989, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Billy and Elaine loved travel, dancing and entertaining friends. They were active members of Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he served on the maintenance committee and helped with the annual pumpkin patch for many years. He was a family man, loving his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory include his daughter Suzanne (Mitchell) Golden along with her daughter Carissa Golden; son Blake Mitchell and his wife Leanna, along with children Jake Mitchell (Haley), Candace Dohman (Justin), Cassie Mitchell, Blaire Elbert and Brooklyn Elbert; and son Barry Mitchell and his wife Shannon along with children Devon Mitchell (Natasha), Maki Verett (Cade), Gareth Schriener (Annie) and Gwendolin Hernandez (Giovanni); four great grandchildren and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Elaine, his parents, his sisters Zelda Comer and Martha Hutcheson and his big brother James Mitchell.
The family would like to extend appreciation to Hospice of Lubbock and their caregivers Latoya and Chloe, and Alice Moreno for their love and care this past year, as well as Lisa Hernandez, Letty Carrillo and Destiny Nicole who cared for Dad and Elaine at home for many years.
The family invites you to join them at the visitation held at Combest Memorial Chapel on Wednesday April 30th, 2025 at 5pm to 7pm.
Graveside service to follow Thursday May 1st, 2025, at Resthaven Memorial Park at 11am.
