Billy Wilbur Wood, 96, of Spartanburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 15, 2025, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Billy was born August 23, 1929, in Spartanburg, SC, a son of the late Carl S. and Beulah Westmoreland Wood.
A veteran of the US Army, Billy was a graduate of Wofford College, and he retired after 35 years of loyal and dedicated service at Duke Power Company. He was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the Deacons two times, was the assistant director of the Young People’s Department and as director of the Married Young People’s Department.
An active volunteer in his free time, Billy positively impacted many local charities, such as the Spartanburg Children’s Shelter, Mobile Meals, and the Salvation Army. A longtime supporter of Wofford College, Billy was presented with The Distinguished Service Award in 2016. He was also a proud supporter of Spartanburg Methodist College.
Billy was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Turner Wood; and his siblings, Dr. Harold W. Wood, C. Hansel Wood, Florence W. Painter, F. Juanita Wood and Mary Anne Johnson. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews whose lives were greatly impacted by his love, attention, and generosity.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A funeral service to honor and celebrate Billy’s life will be held 1:00 pm Friday, September 19, 2025, at Southside Baptist Church, 316 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Schuyler Peterson. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church Legacy Fund, 316 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
