Bishop Robin D Matthews was born on December 1, 1955, here in Wilmington, Delaware, to the late Olivia Matthews and Jimmy Lynn Copper. She went home to be with the lord on June 26, 2025, in the Foulk Manor Nursing Home.
Bishop received her early education in the colonial school district, graduating from De La Warr High School in 1973. After graduating from high school, she worked in the Dietary department at Memorial Hospital for many years and was then hired by the Amtrak Railroad Division for an extended period. After working for the railroad, Bishop developed cancer. During a family circle prayer the night before she went into surgery the next day she made a promise to the lord that said “Lord if you would heal my body that I will serve you until the day I die” and that is when she started working for the LORD and as she promised she worked for the LORD until the day she died.
Bishop was a woman of remarkable independence and adventurous spirit. She had no qualms about getting into her car and traveling to preach or MC for various groups, such as J. Caldwell and the Embassadores, as well as many other groups, often doing so alone. Her fearlessness was further evident when she traveled to Korea and took a solo cruise to the Bahamas, a feat she repeated with her mother on a subsequent trip.
Back in the early 2000s, Bishop developed a breathing disorder, and she had to tote an oxygen tank everywhere she went, including a large tank in the home with a long cord that reached her bedroom, downstairs, and throughout the house. One day, she realized that she had been constantly blowing air from her mouth, which eased the pressure in her chest. Hence, she brought a whistle and tried blowing it, and noticed that something began to move in her chest. It was her airway opening up more and more every time she blew that whistle that made it possible. Until she no longer needed to tote that oxygen, the big tank in her bedroom was finally removed, and she was free, just as she is now.
Bishop was preceded in death by her mother, Olivia Matthews, and father, Jimmy Lynn Copper, and her grandparents, Wilbur and Georgianna Dodd.
Bishop leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Cheryl A. Matthews-Johnson; Evangelist Lynn Johnson; Jiminda Keenan; and her first cousin, who was like a sister, Evangelist Lynnette Lynn-Horton.
While Bishop did not have children of her own, she played a significant role in the lives of her nieces and nephews. Her love and care extended to her three nephews: Dr Jamill Matthews, Jaamar Matthews, and Aiden Keenan. Two great nephews, Malick Matthews and Zaki Brown, four great nieces, Marje’ Gueye. Jamyha Matthews, Lynnmara Tribbett, and Alexis Keenan. Two great-great nieces and nephews, Madior and Nuri Gueye, one uncle, Albert Matthews, three aunts, Mary Ann Griffin, Celest Matthews, Lisa Jones-Gray, and a host of cousins and friends.
