Bohdan Bortnyk Sr
(March 15, 1940 - May 29, 2024)
Bohdan "Dan" Bortnyk Sr., age 84, passed away at home in Myrtle Beach South Carolina May
29, 2024.
Dan loved to ride his Harley, enjoyed creating pencil portraits of people, animals and flowers as
well as appreciate all life and all nature, with special care towards birds.
He was born in Poland but moved to Germany during WW2 and lived in Elizabeth New Jersey
during his childhood and adult years. Dan joined the Army from 1959-1962 and was stationed in
Korea for 13 months.
Dan is predeceased by his wife Irene Chymera Bortnyk, his mother Olga Sygida Bortnyk, his
father John Bortnyk, his sisters Helena DeMicco Bortnyk and Julia Bortnyk. He is survived by
his son Bohdan Bortnyk Jr and wife Christy West Bortnyk, his daughter Christina Cox Bortnyk
and husband Seth Cox, his sisters Irene Russo Bortnyk and Maria Zennario Bortnyk and many
other family members/friends who loved him.
Dan graduated from Irvington Tech and was their first all-state soccer player (a quote from his
yearbook states "and the girls liked him too!"). He then taught math at Madison Central High
School after earning a degree in Mathematics from Jersey City State College. In addition Dan
received his Master's Degree (MA+45) from Georgian Court University.
