Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, Bonneta Sue Slain, lovingly known as "Bonnie," passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at Keystone Place at Newbury Brook, surrounded by the love of her family and the wonderful caregivers of Keystone Place. She was 86 years old.
Bonnie was born on April 15, 1939, to Clarence Alfred Mitchener and Bernice Lucille (Smiley) Mitchener. She was known for her devotion to family, her sunny disposition, and the quiet strength that carried her through life.
She was the beloved wife of Gerry Lee Slain of Matthews, Indiana. Gerry served in the United States Navy, and Bonnie cherished the time they spent living in Sicily together, often sharing those memories with joy. The role Bonnie treasured most was being a mother and grandmother. She was the proud and devoted mother of her only child, Kristina Sue Clark, and loving mother-in-law to Andrew Clark.
Bonnie's grandchildren were a central joy in her life. Jamie and Scott Monahan held a special place in her heart – she traveled all the way to Japan to visit them and enthusiastically attended their games and performances whenever she could. In her later years, through Kristina's second marriage, Bonnie was blessed with another grandchild, Natalia Clark, with whom she formed a close and loving bond.
She is survived by her sisters, Patricia Conelley and Myla Carpenter, as well as many precious family and friends who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Alfred Mitchener and Bernice Lucille (Smiley) Mitchener.
She will be remembered for her kindness, her devotion, her sense of humor, and the love she gave that continues to live on in those who loved her. She was a lover of Christ and a truly good person with a strong conviction to live a right life before God.
Honoring Bonnie's wishes, following cremation she will be taken to Matthews, Indiana, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband and her parents. A burial service will take place at a later date, to be announced.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 pm on February 12, at Thurston Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield.
