It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Boyd V. Black on October 22, 2024, at the age of 94, in the comfort of his home in Sandy, Utah.
Boyd was born on August 2, 1930 to Joseph V. Black and Elizabeth Ann Varty and grew up in Magna, Utah, as the youngest of seven children. He participated in football and wrestling at Cyprus High School and, after graduating, enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He served as a mechanic during the Korean War on the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.
After his military service, Boyd met Neva Beck from Spring City, Utah, and they were married in the Manti Temple on November 14, 1952. Together they settled in Magna, where they began their family of 4 children- three daughters and one son. Later, they built a home in Sandy, where they have lived for the past 53 years. Boyd was a loving husband for 72 years and a devoted father and grandfather. Family was important to him, and he took great pride in the accomplishments of his children.
Boyd earned a Master's Degree in Science from the University of Utah and became a career educator. He taught math for 28 years at Brockbank and Olympus Junior High Schools in the Granite School District. His former students remember him fondly, recalling his sweet tooth and his habit of tossing candy to students with correct answers. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends and family. Boyd and Neva shared a love for the outdoors, and their camping trips brought treasured memories.
He loved motorcycles, and the neighborhood kids would line up for a ride when they heard his bike start. He had a passion for tinkering and fixing things. Up until the last month of his life he was lifting weights, arm wrestling his children and grandchildren, and refusing to take "no" for an answer. He leaves behind a legacy of never giving up and he will be dearly missed.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to all of the caring neighbors and friends for their love and service and also Active Hospice for their support in the final month of his life.
Boyd is survived by his wife Neva Beck Black; children: JoAnn (David) Tuttle, Jane (Kerry) Ward, Jake (Michelle) Black, and Jean (Larry) Colosimo; 7 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 3 sisters, and 1 grandchild, Adam Colosimo.
A service to remember Boyd's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. (visitation at 12:00 p.m.) on November 2 at the Spring City Chapel, 164 S. Main. Interment will be at the Spring City Cemetery.
