Boyd Fred Cain Sr., age 81, of Kincheloe, Michigan, died peacefully in his home on October 30, 2025. He was born on December 31, 1943, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, to Boyd Raymond and Helen Catherine (Farlow) Cain.
Fred grew up in Ohio with his sister and brother where you would find him chasing his little brother Ricky around asking "have you met Charley" while shaking his fist at him. When Ricky would say no, Fred would say "this is a different Charley" and would trick him every time. He was a graduate of Admiral King High School and went on to serve proudly in the United States Air Force for seven years. While stationed at Kincheloe Air Force Base, he met Elizabeth "Barb" Desjardins, and the two were married on October 21, 1966.
Following his service, Fred and Barb returned to Ohio to start their family, and Fred began working at a steel plant, where he was employed as an inspector in the Rolling Mill for seven years before the family relocated to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, for a time, then later to Georgia and Minnesota, before eventually settling back in Kincheloe. Fred worked as a handyman, taking on maintenance jobs until his retirement at age 63.
Fred loved tinkering, especially with televisions and cars. He had a lifelong appreciation for music, particularly Queen. He enjoyed being outdoors riding his bike and was known for his quiet, private nature. He could often be found napping on the couch with a cup of coffee nearby (he loved his 2–3 pots a day), watching Hogan's Heroes, M*A*S*H, or the Game Show Network, and cheering on his beloved Cleveland Browns. Above all else, Fred was a kind-hearted man who deeply loved his family and cherished the time spent with his grandchildren.
Fred is survived by his daughter, Shirley Diane Desjardins of Chubbuck, Idaho; sons, Boyd Fred Cain Jr. of Chubbuck, Idaho, Brian (Mary) Cain of Roper, North Carolina, William (Lorie) Cain of Port Wentworth, Georgia; and daughter, Catherine (Chris) Anderson of Hollandale, Minnesota; grandchildren, Mark (Samantha Anguiano) Bowman, Nathan Cain, Kyle Cain, Kelsey Cain, Don Jackson, Laura Jackson, Carlos (Melanie) Jackson, Austin Garrett, Amber Mazzara, Autumn Garrett, Jonathan Anderson, Codie (Megan) Sterling, Samantha (Levi) Roline and Kaleb Cain; great-grandchildren, Kimberlee, Kolton, Jordan, Nakoma, Isaiah and Courtney; sister, Peggy (Louis) Ramirez of Lorain, Ohio; brother, Richard (Kristy) Cain of Port Charlotte, Florida; and extended family, Doris (Dewey) Bradley, Clifford (Sierra) Yiirs, Alyssa Yiirs, Katelin Yiirs, Carter Yiirs and Conner Yiirs.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Barb; son, Todd Cain; grandson, Christopher Cvengros; and parents, Boyd Raymond and Helen Catherine (Farlow) Cain.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Anthony "Tony" McClusky Sr. for his care and compassion toward Fred.
Honoring Fred's wishes, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned at this time
