Brent was born February 20, 1951, in
Viborg, SD, to Clifford and Arlene (Erickson) Osthus. Brent spent his early years in
Centerville, SD, and during junior high moved with his family to
Rapid City, SD, where he formed many lasting friendships. The family later relocated to
Watertown, SD, where Brent excelled in football and basketball for the Watertown Arrows. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1969. Following graduation, Brent began working for Lakeland Nursery in Watertown.
Brent married Dianne K. Redlin on August 1, 1971, in
Watertown, SD. He continued working for Lakeland Nursery until 1980, when he and Dianne purchased Jeans Flowers in De Smet, SD. They owned and ran the flower shop and bought the bakery there as well. Brent went to work for P.A. Braunger Food Supply as an Institutional Food Sales Representative. He worked for the company and their subsidiaries until his health forced him to retire in 2016. Brent won numerous trips and built friendships for a lifetime in his sales travels throughout the years. He truly went above and beyond to make sure his customers were number one!
Brent's number one priority in his life was his family, especially his grandchildren. He cherished the time he spent fishing with his boys, especially their annual ice fishing trip and fulfilling his daughter's requests. Brent enjoyed spending time at "the cabin" in the Black Hills, going to Arizona in the winter with his wife, and teaching his boys the proper terminology of certain life things…like "Fizz/Fuzz" (HaHa). Everyone knows Brent could never have enough food made for all; he always wanted to make sure people, especially kids, were taken care of. Brent was recently inducted into the Watertown Arrows Athletic Hall of Fame, an award he was so very proud of.
Brent is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Dianne K. Osthus of
Sioux Falls, SD; his three children: Chad (Kristi) Osthus of
Watertown, SD, and their children, Morgan and Macee, Emily Osthus of
Sioux Falls, SD, and her children, Shelbie (Austin) and Reeghan, Paul (Andrea) Osthus of Baltic, SD, and their children, Tony and Lola; one great-granddaughter, Gianna; one brother, Larry (Jodi) Osthus of Des Moines, IA; one sister, Brenda (Merlin) Smith of
Sioux Falls, SD; one sister-in-law, Lynn Osthus of
Watertown, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
Brent was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Arlene; and one brother, Gordon.
