Brett Blackburn Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapels - Edina on Dec. 29, 2025.
Basalt, CO - Brett M. Blackburn, 46, unexpectedly died on December 8, 2025, in Basalt, Colorado - he was born in Minneapolis on July 13, 1979. Brett graduated from Minnetonka High School in 1997, and he obtained his associate degree in Architectural Drafting and Estimating from Dunwoody College of Technology, Minneapolis in 2011. In January 2025, Brett moved to Colorado to join a Recovery Program that integrates sobriety with personal development through outdoor activities, excursions, and work opportunities. Although Brett lost his battle with addiction, these last 11 months allowed him to rediscover the love and pride in himself for which we are forever grateful. Brett loved participating in a variety of outdoor and sports activities, including fishing, water skiing, golf, snowboarding, hockey, baseball, and football. He was also a passionate fan of both college and professional sports, and he would enthusiastically cheer for the Iowa Hawkeyes alongside his brother, Matt. Brett found great happiness in the companionship of his devoted German Shepherd, Frank. Brett is survived by his mother, Suzanne Blackburn, as well as his aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his brother and best friend Matt, his stepfather Paul Gerlach, his father Paul Blackburn, and his cousin Tony Ambrose. A service to honor Brett will be held spring/summer 2026.
