Brian D. Hayes

It was Mr. Hayes, my dear friend and neighbor who taught me the proper way to swing a bat while he coached the after school Adams Street School little league. Because his love for sports and coaching, I had the courage to join an all- boys team back in the 1970s due to the confidence he inspired in me, just Ann 11 year old girly- girl who didn´t even know what the term " bench me" meant as the boys hurled major league insults my way.
Thank you, Mr. Hayes for your inspiration and commitment to our school and neighborhood, always making it a better and safer place to live. I will truly miss your friendly hellos, your stories about Ireland, your comedic sense of humor.

To the Hayes Family,

I am so sad to hear about Mr. Hayes's passing (I suppose he will always be Mr. Hayes to me).  He was an extremely kind person and outstanding father with a deep appreciation of music, a subversive sense of humor (on full display with that raspy laugh), and was always a blast to play board games with.  I still admire his ever-youthful spirit and openness to try new things even later in his life.  I am of course here thinking of his decision to act on the stage for the very first time in "The Marriage of Bette and Boo" alongside the more seasoned Mike and Steve.  In this play, not only did he have to deliver an enormous monologue as Father Donnaley (while Mrs. Hayes paced nervously in the lobby), but he was also called upon at some point in the same speech to imitate a piece of bacon frying on a skillet (accompanied by "Thus Spake Zarathustra", no less) - a thing did to great acclaim!   It was impossible not to like Mr. Hayes and he will always hold a special place in my thoughts.

I wish you all much strength and healing in the weeks and months to come and please know that I am sending much love your way.
