If you ever found yourself at a family reunion on Tyler or Pelican Lake, you knew exactly where to look for Brian Johnston. He was at the helm of the boat, grinning ear to ear, the captain of countless rides filled with laughter, stories, and the kind of joy only he could bring. That was Brian-a man who lived for family, faith, and the simple pleasures that made life rich.
At 86, Brian passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of love, humility, and devotion. Just this past week, he and his beloved wife Joanna celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary, marked by the blessing of their rings-a beautiful testament to their enduring love and partnership, which was the heart of his life. A proud veteran and retired firefighter, Brian spent his life in service to others, protecting his community with courage and compassion. His deep Catholic faith was the foundation of his days, guiding him in service and in the way he cared for those around him.
He was a devoted husband, proud father, and incredible grandfather, whose greatest happiness came from time spent with family. Whether tending his garden, bowling a few frames, or transforming into Santa at Christmas-complete with his fireman's boots beneath the red suit-he brought joy wherever he went. At weddings, his dance moves were legendary, a reminder that celebration was meant to be shared.
Brian was a man of the biggest heart-humble, selfless, and always putting others first. He gave without asking, lived without pretense, and left behind memories that will be cherished for generations.
Brian is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary (nee Rittman) Johnston.
Brian is survived by his loving wife, Joanna; his children Andrew (Tracy), Alan (Jennifer), Lisa (Jon), and Melissa (Stephen); and his grandchildren, Alexandra, David (Amber), Isabella, Parker, Jonathan, Morgan, Laura, Sarah, Charles, and Mary-who were the center of his world and the joy of his later years. He is also blessed with great-grandchildren, who added to his happiness and extended the love he carried forward. Brian will be remembered fondly by extended family and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts.
In celebration of Brian's life, we ask that you celebrate your own family-gather together, share stories, laugh, dance, and love as he always did.
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." - 2 Timothy 4:7
The family wishes to thank all who have offered prayers, love, and support during this time.
Gathering will be held at 9:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM on Friday, November 21, 2025 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 9303 South Chicago Road, Oak Creek, Wisconsin. A reception for family and friends will follow at The Bucyrus Club, 1919 12th Avenue, South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with private interment at a later date.
