Brian Kirby Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Freed-Givnish Funeral Home, Inc. AKA John R. Freed Funeral Home on Feb. 9, 2026.
Brian M. Kirby, of Alburtis, formerly of Oreland and Philadelphia, passed away surrounded by family on January 22, 2026, at the age of 48.

He is predeceased by his loving parents Jim Kirby, Sr. and Jean Kirby (nee Keane).

Brian will be sorely missed by his brothers James W. Kirby, Jr. (Tracy), Patrick M. Kirby, Sr. (Lorie) whom he lived with, Christopher J. Kirby Sr. (Megan), and his sister Janine M. Kirby. His nieces and nephews will miss their beloved uncle: Nicole Kirby, Callie Kirby, Patrick M. Kirby, Jr., Caroline Kirby, Cassidy Kirby, Nicholas Kirby, Aidan Kirby, James W. Kirby III, Catherine Kirby, Sophia Conenna, and Christopher J. Kirby, Jr.

Brian grew up in Olney, attending Cardinal Dougherty High School (class of '95) where he spent two years playing the school mascot, The Cardinal. This was just one of many occasions Brian used to make others laugh and have a great time – it seemed to be his life's calling. At an early age Brian was diagnosed with Myotonic Dystrophy. Despite this diagnosis, he never once complained and was always so strong, brave and happy.

Shortly after graduating, Brian moved with his family to Oreland, PA. He began to work at a local delicatessen and then the Flourtown Acme part time despite his physical impairments. Brian was a dedicated deli employee that made his co-workers' shifts all the better for being there - ready with a tall tale and words of encouragement. Customers became friends as they would request and patiently wait for Brian to be the one to wait on them. He was a champion for their yearly MDA fundraisers – always involved and giving back, raising awareness, and volunteering - just like his parents before him. After many years of working as long as he could, Brian retired when he no longer could handle the physical strain of the job. His Acme family still love and miss him today, sharing memories about his stories, his karaoke performances and trivia nights at the bar.

Brian left an impression on everyone who met him. Whether it be with his infamous stories, a snarky remark about the Phillies game, a spirited debate about Marvel vs DC, Star Wars canon, or which WWF star was indeed the all-time best, "Butch" / "Sheep"/ "Base" was always willing and wanting to sit and talk for hours with anyone and everyone. He was a big character in a skinny frame – always smiling regardless of any hardship in his path. His bright smile and positive attitude were infectious.

Family & friends are invited to celebrate Brian's life and share memories on February 20, 2026, at Flourtown Country Club, 150 McCloskey Road, Flourtown, PA 19031. Visitation is from 9am to 11am. A short service will be at 11am with a luncheon to follow. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations to the Officer Daniel Boyle Scholarship Fund, PO Box 11511, Philadelphia, PA 19116.
