Brian Powell

Brian Powell, a strong member of the Montpelier community and a dedicated Architectural Preservationist, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026, at the age of 74 after a sudden and brief illness. He was born on August 27, 1951, in Montpelier, VT, and was a longtime resident of Massachusetts. Brian resided in the Cooper Frost Austin House, the oldest house in Cambridge (built in 1681), for many years. He took pride in living in this historic home and loved to provide tours and share its history throughout his time living there. Brian returned to his hometown of Montpelier after his retirement.

A proud graduate of Montpelier High School, Brian went on to earn a Bachelor of Architecture from Yale University in 1974. His passion for historic preservation led him to further his education at Boston University, where he received a master’s degree after completing his Preservation Studies Program in 1981.

Throughout his distinguished career, Brian worked with numerous prestigious firms, including the Edward K. Perry Company of Boston, the Historic New England Conservation Center, and Building Conservation Associates, Inc. He was particularly proud of his contributions to significant projects such as the restoration of the Paul Revere House, the Old North Church in Boston, the Massachusetts Governor's office, and the renowned Trinity Church in Copley Square. He also did work at George Washington’s Mount Vernon and was featured on the History Channel. His talent and dedication were recognized when a miniature model of the 1681 Cooper Frost Austin House that he created was selected as an ornament for the White House Christmas Tree during George W. Bush's first year in office. This beloved piece now resides in the Bush Presidential Library in Texas.

Brian is survived by his immediate family, brother Richard (Dick) Powell II, and his partner Diane, his niece Tara Grenier, her husband, Craige, and their son, Bradley, and his nephew Ricky Powell, his wife, Brittany, and their son Calvin. Brian was predeceased by his parents, Ines and Richard Powell, also of Montpelier.

At the time of his passing, he was supported and surrounded by his family, including his cousin, Gail Hanson, with whom he shared a special bond. Brian will be remembered for his compassion, sensitivity, unique humor, and love for his family and friends. He deeply cared about the people and communities he was a part of, as well as his unwavering dedication to his craft. Brian was kind and fun. He loved singing silly songs to his two great nephews and shocking everyone with “Uncle Brian” gifts around the holidays, equally as odd as they were engaging and fun. Brian used to make the most meticulous Christmas cookies every holiday season, which were more like art, something we all looked forward to enjoying and admiring. Knowing him and being a part of his life was our gift, our blessing, and he will be greatly cherished and missed.

Brian Powell leaves behind a legacy of architectural triumphs, a deep appreciation and understanding of our ancestral journey, and a profound impact on the community he so lovingly served. He will be continually carried with by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Visitation will take place at Guare & Sons Funeral Home on February 25, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM. An informal memorial service will begin at 11:30. His interment will be private at the family’s lot at Green Mount Cemetery, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, please do something kind for someone, as Brian was a pillar of such kindness.
