Obituary published on Legacy.com by Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc. on Dec. 10, 2025.
With deep love and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Brian Andrew Smyth, who left this world on November 16, 2025, in
Poughkeepsie, NY, at the age of 37. Brian was born on June 23, 1988, in
Rhinebeck, NY, spending his early childhood in upstate New York before his family settled in
Charlotte, NC.
Brian is survived by his parents, Patty and Donald Smyth; his loving partner, Uyen Le; and his cherished daughter, Adelyn Smyth, his greatest joy and the one he never ended a conversation without saying, "I love you, kiddo.". He is also survived by his sister, Maggie Hammond, and her husband, Steven, along with their children-Selah, Livie, and Tucker-who adored their uncle. Brian leaves behind his grandparents, Barbara and George Smyth; many aunts and uncles, as well as numerous cousins who will forever hold his memory close.
From a young age, Brian had a curious mind. He was an Eagle Scout, an outdoorsman, a woodworker, and a lifelong learner who found joy in figuring out how things worked. In high school, while learning to play guitar, he decided to not just practice music, but to build a guitar of his own-beautifully handcrafted in the garage workshop. That was Brian: endlessly curious and always ready to learn and master a new craft.
Brian's thirst for knowledge carried into his adult life. He earned a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary biology from Virginia Tech and later completed a master's degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Adelaide in Australia. His passion for winemaking-equal parts science and art-became one of the great personal accomplishments of his life. He earned numerous awards for his work, serving as Head Winemaker at Chateau Morrisette Winery, Effingham Manor and Winery, Pearmund Cellars, and Vint Hill Winery over the course of his career.
In 2025, Brian embraced another chapter of learning when he joined the Culinary Institute of America to pursue a bachelor's degree in Culinary Science-bringing together his love of food, curiosity, and creativity. Cooking was one of the ways Brian expressed love, a passion he learned from his mom and shared generously whenever possible.
Brian's life carried him across the world, from Oregon to Australia, Virginia to New York. Those closest to him knew him as intelligent, gentle, determined, and incredibly gifted-a master of many crafts who poured himself wholeheartedly into whatever he set his mind to. Along the way, many of Brian's life decisions were shaped by the countless talks he shared with his dad over the years-moments of guidance he treasured deeply.
Three years ago, Brian met Uyen, and they built a beautiful life together. Their home was filled with love, devotion, and delicious food-Brian crafting savory dishes (searing over charcoal was a must) while Uyen created stunning pastries and desserts. They were a perfect team, each bringing out the best in the other.
But above all his talents and achievements, Brian was a devoted father. Whether teaching Adelyn a new skill, exploring the outdoors together, listening to good music, or cooking (Brian's signature lasagna, grilled meat, guacamole and cloud eggs were a few favorites they shared), Brian spent countless hours driving to and from Front Royal, Virginia to spend time with his beloved girl. His love for her was undeniable.
A service honoring Brian's life will be held on Tuesday, December 30th at 2pm at Journey Church (4173 Bludau Dr. Warrenton, VA 20187). All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend and celebrate the remarkable man he was.
Brian's legacy lives on in the many people he loved, the crafts he mastered, the meals he shared, and the lessons he passed down-especially to Adelyn. He will be missed beyond measure.
