Brian Walsh Obituary

Brian D. Walsh, 61, of Philadelphia and Scranton, passed away Saturday October 12, 2024 following a struggle with cancer.

Brian was born in Scranton and was the son of the late John R. Walsh Jr. and Rosemary B. Walsh. He graduated from Scranton Central High School in 1981. After completing two years of service in the U.S. Army in Germany, Brian earned his bachelors degree at Penn State University and later received his masters degree from Temple University. He was a teacher in the Philadelphia School District for thirty years before retiring in 2020. During his career, he worked across many grade levels but spent the last ten years at Philadelphia's premier secondary school, Central High School. He also coached for several years and had many fans among the thousands of students he taught over three decades.

As a young man, Brian was an outstanding baseball and basketball player. In his last year at St. Paul's school, he and his basketball teammates went to the state championship. He went on to play for the varsity basketball team at Central High School and continued playing during his two years at Penn State Scranton. Brian was also an avid runner, tennis player and mountain biker. And he was a member of several support groups that helped him greatly during difficult periods in his life. He was happiest when amongst his family and friends at Round Pond in the summertime.

Brian is survived by three siblings: Mary Barbara Walsh and husband Anthony Dalasio of Clarks Green; Linda Walsh of Scranton and Christopher Walsh of Alexandria, Virginia. He is also survived by brother-in-law Michael Battle, five nieces, one nephew and many cousins. He was preceded in death by two siblings: Colleen Walsh and Jay Walsh.

The family wishes to acknowledge the tremendous care shown Brian in hospice over the last few months of his life and asks that in lieu of flowers, friends and family make a donation to the good folks of Hospice of the Sacred Heart at https://www.hospicesacredheart.org/donate

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 26 at Hilton Scranton, 100 Adams Ave. Family will receive relatives and friends at the same hotel at 10:15 am prior to the memorial service. Arrangements by Albert P. O'Donnell Funeral Home, Dunmore.
