Obituary for Dr. Brian Wise Weaver
Dr. Brian Wise Weaver, beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away March 7, 2025. Born in Buffalo, New York, to the late Mrs. Evelyn Wise Weaver and Dr. Ronald Weaver, Brian was the third of four children. He grew up in a family deeply rooted in the values of knowledge, service, and excellence, with the guidance and love of his grandparents, R.L. and Flossie Wise.
Brian's intellect was apparent from an early age. Even as a child, he knew he had a calling for medicine. His passion for learning and his deep empathy for others made it clear that he was destined for a career where he could make a real difference. From the moment he set his sights on medicine, there was no doubt in his mind that this was the path he was meant to follow.
He excelled academically, graduating with honors and distinction at every level of his education. Following in his father's footsteps, he pursued medicine at Meharry Medical College School of Medicine in 1987. Dr. Weaver completed his internship at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, followed by a residency at Henry Ford Hospital. He later became board-certified in radiation oncology, choosing a specialty where African Americans were notably underrepresented.
For nearly 15 years, he served as the director of the Bethesda Cancer Center in Arkansas. His work there was defined by compassion and a deep, personal commitment to improving the lives of countless patients and their families as they faced cancer diagnoses. Dr. Weaver's impact was immeasurable, and his legacy is one of profound care and service to others.
Brian Weaver was also committed to his culture and heritage. While at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, he and his friends founded the first Black Student Caucus, recognizing the importance of creating a support network for students of color-an organization that continues to provide support to students to this day. Like his father, Brian became a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., when he was initiated into the Omega Nu Chapter in Springfield, Illinois, on April 29, 1995. He upheld the values of the fraternity, including manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift.
While Dr. Weaver's professional achievements were numerous, he was always humble about his accomplishments, never seeking recognition for himself but always proud of his family's accomplishments and service. His love for life was infectious. A man who appreciated the beauty of the world, Dr. Weaver traveled extensively and found joy in everything from skiing and attending car shows to watching classic comedy sitcoms, sharing his laughter and love with those closest to him.
In his later years, Dr. Weaver became a devoted caregiver to his mother, Mrs. Evelyn Wise Weaver, giving back the same love and care she had always shown him. His selflessness was at the heart of who he was.
Brian's passion for helping others, his deep intellect, and his genuine kindness made him an unforgettable person to all who knew him. He was a quiet man who cherished life's simple joys, whether it was spending time with family, traveling, or indulging in his passion for concept cars.
Dr. Brian Weaver was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Weaver, and father, Ronald Adrian Weaver. He is survived by his siblings: Ronald Adrian Weaver, Avis Weaver, and John Weaver; his niece and nephews: Shezza Shagarabi, Anwar Shagarabi, and Rani Shagarabi; his cousins Larry Sherard and Natalie Sherard; and other loving relatives and friends.
Dr. Weaver will be forever loved, missed, and remembered. His legacy of kindness, intellect, and care for others will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace, our beloved Brian. Your memory will live on in the hearts of all who were touched by your brilliance and love.

Dr. Brian Weaver was a groomsman in my wedding many years ago. I remember him as a man with a contagious smile, great intellect and much humility. Brian was always kind and a gentleman to all that he encountered. Although it has been many years since our last meeting, his great spirit and and genuine personnality remained very clear in my memory.
May you rest in peace Brian!

I was very sorry to read about the passing of Dr. Weaver.

As the University Librarian at Oglethorpe University, I would like to honor Dr. Weaver with a book in the library collection in his memory. If a family member would reach out to me with a title, I will purchase it and place a memorial book plate in the front cover with his name.

You can reach me via email at [email protected].
