Brigitte Barbee Obituary

Brigitte Herta (Fuchs) Barbee, 77, of Grasonville, Maryland died peacefully on January 15, 2025. Often known as "Bridget" or "Brig" by her friends, she was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and Großmutter to her family. She was full of life and her spark will be missed. Born on June 10, 1947, in Kiel, Germany, she immigrated with her parents to the United States, turning 5 years old while at sea. After coming to the US, the family eventually settled in Kent Village, Prince Georges County, Maryland. Brigitte married Vincent Barbee in 1963, and they raised three children in Mitchellville, MD. They later moved to Grasonville in 1985 and following a divorce, she remained in Grasonville. Brigitte had many jobs over her lifetime, but the one most people remember her from, and she cared the most for was her job as a Toll Collector at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. She met so many people who came through her toll booth and she had lots of fun stories. The bridge she once hated to drive over became something she drove across multiple times a day. She loved being part of that team and friends always tried to pick "Mrs. Barbee's Lane!" Brigitte loved to have a fun time – she enjoyed cruising with her friends, going to the casino to the slots (she claims she always won) and going to the Jetty. More than anything, she loved her family, and she loved her heritage. She is preceded by her parents, Heinz and Margarete Fuchs. She is survived by her sister, Heidi Brotherton (Joseph); her three children Tammy Duvall (Charles), Christine Chandler (Clark) and Scott Barbee (Mary Beth.) She has three grandchildren Roy Duvall (Mary), Andrew Duvall (Allyson), Cayla Fickinger (Peter), two great granddaughters, twins Blakely and Rory Fickinger and nephew, Douglas Brotherton (Gabby.) She also has an aunt, Christa Harlinghaus, who lives in Duisburg, Germany. She loved to cheer for the Ravens and is playing Rummikub in heaven! The family will host a Celebration of Life in remembrance of Brigitte in the spring.

My family and the Fuchs family met in 1956. Brigitte and I were about 9 years old and Heidi was a toddler. Soon thereafter we all became very good friends. We saw them on weekends and always on Christmas Eve. A close friendship that lasted for decades. So many wonderful memories.
All of us kids grew up, got married and had children.
Brigitte and I lost touch but Heidi kept me informed
regarding Brigitte's declining
health. I was very sad to hear of her passing. Please accept my sympathy and sincere condolences.

My mother was proud of her German heritage but equally proud of her American citizenship! This is a pic from her childhood. I miss her everyday, but promise to keep our heritage alive in all of us!

I met Brigitte at Cayla´s wedding. She was cheerful, loving and so easy to get to know. She loved all her family and enjoyed relating stories from the past. I know that she is rejoicing with those in Heaven and is now free from pain.

I grew up in Kent Village with Brigitte and her sister Heidi. The girls taught me lots of things as they were older. One lesson was a cuss word I was saying and didn´t know was bad lol Prayers to her family

We were childhood friends . My parents were from the Netherlands and my father worked at the Netherlands embassy. Brigittes mom and dad became very good friends as we lived across the street from each other. We were the same age and spent lotsof time together. Even though I returned to Holland we kept in touch. I am so sorry that I was not able to visit you when I was in the USA in October. But thanks to FaceTime we were able to see each other. Rest in peace my dear friend

I will miss my sister forever. She lived life to the fullest. That is what I loved most about her. She always included me in her adventures whether it be a day trip or to the Bahamas. I love you, big sister!
