Dr. Brigitte Curtis died on August 10th, 2023, at the age of 63 at her home in Lubbock, Texas.

Born on January 4th, 1960, in Boulder, Colorado, Brigitte was the second of Dr. George William (Bill) Curtis and Mary Catherine (Mag) Magrath’s four children. Bill, an astrogeophysicist by training, emigrated to the United States after serving in the Belgian Underground during WWII. Mag, raised in McCook, Nebraska, received a Master’s degree in chemistry and studied French, passions she carried into her parenting and cooking.

Brigitte and her three siblings, Kevin, Sean, and Moira were raised in a deeply loving home that emphasized excellence in all pursuits, be they academic or athletic. A French-speaking household, the family could be found splitting their time between the tennis court and the various ski slopes of the Rocky Mountains. Brigitte became known for maintaining the stellar GPA required by her parents, even while skipping class on Fridays to ski. The four siblings gained a reputation for defying authority and creating mischief, a familial trait from both parents, which continues to be passed through generations. The family spent their summers in Nebraska where Brigitte enjoyed time with her cousins and developed what would prove to be a lifelong love for animals through her Uncle’s veterinary practice.

Brigitte began her undergraduate studies at the University of Santa Clara where she met Lawrence (Larry) Martinelli, the father of her four children, and added beaches to her list of love for nature. She finalized her bachelor’s degree in French Literature at the University of Colorado in 1982. Brigitte continued her studies at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, where she graduated with her M.D. in 1988. Living on her own at the time, a string of burglaries motivated her to become a dog owner. Caring for animals would prove to be a life-long passion, practically beyond reason. Brigitte returned to the beach to complete her residency and fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Brigitte moved to Lubbock in 1993. It was here she became a mother, the title she held closest to her heart. Inspired by her own upbringing, she raised her four children, Alexander, Timothy, Ariane and Peter, with the same emphasis on education and love of the outdoors. Countless trips to her hometown of Boulder were her way of ensuring a lifelong connection between her children, her parents, and the Rocky Mountains.

Whether taking her daughter to horse lessons or her sons to soccer and basketball, she was ever-present at her children’s extracurricular activities, none of which were tennis much to her disappointment. Brigitte’s house was truly a home. This was true not only for her children but also for their friends and an ever-expanding host of animals: dogs, cats, and anything else that needed love. Outside of her children, Brigitte loved gardening, reading, coffee, good wine, current events, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, baking, and Hallmark movies.

Brigitte’s move to Lubbock also started her career as a psychiatrist. Over her 30-year career, she combined all the same characteristics that made her a wonderful mother with her professional training to help an uncountable number of people. Along with her private practice, she worked with numerous state-funded healthcare facilities including Canyon Lakes Residential Treatment Center, Boys Ranch and StarCare. Dr. Curtis’ passion for helping others was unparalleled. Answering calls at all times of the day, she provided a listening and empathetic ear to all those in her care. Patients found in her a safe haven to share their vulnerabilities without the fear of judgment or stigma. She will be remembered for her dedication to the mental health and well-being of others, qualities which made her a pillar of the community in Lubbock and throughout the region.

Brigitte is survived by her four children, Alexander Martinelli (Grinnell, IA), Timothy Martinelli (Lubbock, TX), Ariane Martinelli (Lubbock, TX) and Peter Martinelli (Lubbock, TX); three siblings, Kevin Curtis (Silver Spring, MD), Sean Curtis (Chappaqua, NY), and Moira Curtis McCabe (Denver, CO); and four dogs and at least two cats.

My deepest condolences for the tragic loss of such a wonderful and caring person. I came to her in my darkest hour in 2012, and she was my doctor on and off since that time, and she helped me so much during that time. I knew she was a good soul when we "bonded" over furbabies. She will definitely be missed. The community lost a good one for sure. My heart goes out to the family and I will be keeping everyone in my prayers for comfort and understanding. I am anxious and afraid of finding another doctor because no one can take her place. RIH Dr. Curtis.

Dr. Curtis was my psychiatrist for a few years in my late teens
She helped me through some of the worst times of my life, and through working with her, it helped me discover my love of psychology and helping others. It is because of people like Dr. Curtis that I am able to overcome obstacles in life to reach my full potential, going to school and working hard to make a full circle and hopefully help others the way she helped me. She was the best type of person to be and a role model for us all. My condolences to her family I hope you find strength by seeing the amount of people she helped

My heart is broken to know that the most compassionate person I have ever known has died. It is so tragic . She was a friend and a physician, she was my rock through so many events of life. She was always available to help, regardless of the hour. I hope the family can move on and forgive themselves this tragic loss.

Dr. Curtis has been my doctor over a decade now. Thru the up and the way downs she's been there. Even late night returning phone calls or texts she was there. Soft, even spoken and always reassuring, our last interaction was her asking if I thought she was doing enough for the neighborhood cat. How touching to include me that way. I'm really going to miss her.

It´s spinning like surrealism; a Dali painting I don´t fully comprehend. I feel for your family, especially your children. I feel for all those you´ve helped throughout the years. Doctors always told me I couldn´t thrive/ achieve life goals because of schizoaffective disorder. You were different. You always believed in me. I never got the chance to tell you how excited I was that out of all people- my psychiatrist!- attended my dissertation defense about cooccurring schizophrenia & addiction. I couldn´t have felt more nervous & honored to have you there. Also, I´m sorry I cursed you out the year prior when you called CIT officers to my apartment and then called my mom, but thanks for keeping me alive. I hope Rain jumped over Rainbow Bridge to wag her tail and eat dinner with you. She loved you. Thank you for watching her when went to the hospital. I didn´t trust anyone else to give her insulin. I could write an essay about all the memories we´ve made together, but I´ll keep the rest between you and me. P.S. I´ll just ask Bob to prescribe me Prince´s song "Let´s Go Crazy" next time I´m depressed. See you later.

I remember moving to Lubbock in 2005 to 18th street. And this incredible woman walking 4 children and 2 enormous dogs down my street. The woman leading this parade was Brigitte! Her twins in the stroller were my second child´s age . She already 4 !!! And 2 dogs bigger than her . Over the next 12 years I grew to know her and admire her for not only the strong woman that she was but the great mom , and courageous doctor that she was ! You are now where you belong beside Christ Jesus.

To Brigitte´s dear siblings, children, friends, clients and family: We are so saddened and devastated to learn of her passing. Although we did not see each other often, my interactions with her were always warm and loving. After we lost everything in 1992 from Hurricane Andrew, Brigitte sent clothes to us. Most recently spending time with her and the family in Boulder, Brigitte and I spoke of family and trying harder to stay connected. It gives us comfort that she is in the loving company of her parent´s Mag, Bill, my mom and Dad, Frank, Kathy, Uncle Joe, Aunt Cathy and Matt. We know that there is little we can do to ease the pain and grief, but please know we are sending constant prayers of strength, peace and comfort. We love you, Cece, Tony, Mary K & George a donation will be made to NAMI an organization that is near and dear to my family´s heart.

I knew Brigitte as a colleague and friend since 1994, and we shared office space for a year. She was an excellent psychiatrist and I observed her great joy at motherhood. I made baby quilts for her children and watched her radiant happiness with each of them. She gave her best to her patients and her family, and is, and will continue to be, greatly missed. I extend my deepest condolences to her family.

Dr. Brigitte Curtis was truly a blessing to our family. My son had just got him diagnosis and we found out his old doctor was retiring. To say I was terrified for what my son would face was an understatement being no one would take his insurance. And then we found this amazing women. She listened to my son and myself. She was always there for us with anything we needed, from letters, 504 meetings, medication refills or just to listen. My son would talk with her more then he does any other doctor he has. It broke his little heart went I told him that she passed and we would have to find another doctor. She will be so dearly missed by many. She sure did leave a legacy. I have been thinking of her family, friends, colleagues, and patients daily. I pray for peace for everyone. Rest in peace Dr. Curtis.

We took care of Brigitte's animals since she moved to Lubbock- I guess around 30 yrs. She was a great client, loved her animals deeply and someone we always enjoyed seeing, talking to and dealing with as life continued day by day. I remember her kids coming in with her when they were young- and we continued seeing them all the time up until the present time. We last saw Brigitte that fateful Thursday in fact. Our hearts are broken for her family, friends and her patients and for us- she was dear to all of us. May God's Tender Mercy bless her loved ones and family as they struggle through this very difficult time.

I wish I had words for how incredible Dr. Curtis was for me. She continues to touch my life. I stopped to pick up a prescription in Walgreens today and realized just how much she did without asking, looking for gratitude. For all of us. She not only called in scripts, but coupons, savings, and listened. Really really listened to us. I can´t even think about her without crying. I miss her so much and she was my doctor. I can only imagine how hurt her family is. I´m so so sorry for their loss. You have so much of my love and affection.

I was the librarian at the school all of Brigitte´s children attended. She was one of those wonderful moms who, in spite of a demanding career and busy life, volunteered for everything they were involved in, including reading to kids in the library. It was an honor to have known her, and I am heartbroken for her family and friends. God bless.

My husband Gerald and I were Brigitte's dogs groomers, and we considered her our friend. We went to her every month to bathe and care for her lovely dogs. Brigitte was always so kind and caring, we never knew what she did, but the stories of her patients align with how we knew her at her home. She was always kind and caring, made sure we had lemonade and snacks if we needed. We were absolutely heartbroken when we showed up yesterday and talked with her son and learned of her passing. Brigitte was definitely a light in our life, we both looked forward to visiting with her every month for almost 2 years, we will forever miss Brigitte and her lovely dogs, Sunshine, Teddy, Joe and Rose.

I have been a patient of Dr. Curtis for many years. She always made me feel welcome and as if she heard me. She helped me realize my self-worth and guided me through the grieving process after the death of my brother. Even encouraged me to start back at college, where I eventually graduated. She not only asked me how I was doing each visit but always gave me that little extra advice to show she cared. I am a better person because of her and I know the community has lost someone special. My prayers go out to her friends, family and the many lives she touched.

So many memories flood my mind. I had the pleasure of working with Dr Curtis for part of my 17 yrs that I was educating at Canyon Lakes. I remember when she started making visits there. I learned alot from consulting with her concerning the students' needs. Even after I left I would still run into her out in public always asking how it was going and she would tell me of her latest venture. Lubbock has truly lost a great colleague. May God comfort her family during this time of sorrow.

Dr. Curtis was kind and compassionate for her patients, with her I got to experience working with the pediatric population, and although proven challenging at times (ie. blood draws), it was amazing to work with her and her patients. As a practicing psychologist in Lubbock, I met Dr. Brigitte Curtis in the late 1980s. A very comfortable and natural relationship of mutual referrals and working together developed and she continued through the years to accept my referrals, never turning me down even when she was swamped, unless she identified and helped refer to someone that she thought might be more appropriate for a particular individual. When the time came that Canyon Lakes Residential Treatment Center needed a new psychiatrist and a Medical Director, I reached out to Dr. Curtis and many years of good interactions and collegial support followed as we worked in that setting. The arrival of Dr. Curtis to Lubbock was in general a very positive thing for our community. She was highly skilled, particularly with children, adolescents, and young adults and she treated them with great respect. She demonstrated a professional, but also personal investment in the work with her patients, demonstrating elements of a friendship/caring, and her reliance on medication was always conservative and closely monitored while she, very unlike many busy psychiatrist's, always made time to talk, not just conduct hasty medication checks in serial fashion. I miss Dr. Curtis already, as do so many people in our community. I can say that many of us are better because of having known her and our community is certainly better for her having served Lubbock and the surrounding communities for so many years. May God bless her entire family and may healing come for her children and all who were close to her.

Eleven years ago, my then six year old son´s educators recommended he be screened for ADHD. I was concerned about choosing the right provider and a therapist friend recommended making the drive from Canyon to Lubbock to see Dr. Curtis, as the quality of care would be worth the hardship of the travel. Dr. Curtis saw my son from the ages of 6-17, with the last appointment being in March of this year. Never having the need to personally work with a psychiatrist, what a relief to have such a kind, empathetic, and intelligent provider help my son. She didn´t just help him - she helped our family. She was attentive to our needs in the most compassionate way I´ve ever seen. My family is devastated by this news and offer our sincerest condolences to her family, who must be feeling such a heavy loss. You´re in my prayers. I hope the community of her colleagues assures you are supported and provided the resources you may need.

She helped me realize my worth, helped me stop the bad habits I had engaged in, and listened intently to me without judgement. She also made appointments for me on Saturdays meeting my mother and I in her office. She was a true gem of a person and I credit her with helping me with my mental health. Dr.Curtis was so kind and caring, always spent lots of time visiting with the children and making behavioral changes for them instead of giving them more medication. She will be missed! No words can describe the type of person Dr. Curtis. She was unmatched and truly had a passion for helping her patients. She was truly a doctor who was caring, compassionate, and put everything into her patients. Because of her she inspired me to go into the mental health profession to show and help others what she has taught me. She never gave up and truly saved and changed my life. It´s been a great 9 years Dr. Curtis and my loyalty will always lie to you. Miss and love you Dr, Curtis and thank you for everything. You will always have a special place in my heart.

Dr. Curtis was truly one of a kind. Her passion for helping her patients is unmatchable. She was one of the most caring doctors I have ever met and always went above and beyond to find the perfect treatment plan. She never gave up on me and was so dedicated to her patients and worked so much. The past 9 years have been so wonderful with her and always assured me that she was always there and never let me down. My loyalty has always lied to her. Because of her, she has motivated me to get into the mental health profession because I want to give back as show others what Dr, Curtis has taught and shown me. She was so selfless and truly had a passion for mental health. She saved my life and I will be forever grateful to her for changing my life. It deeply saddens me but she will always have a special place in my heart! Love and miss you Dr. Curtis and thank you for everything. You truly made a mark in this world.
