Bruce George Acker, 94 of Scituate died on Sunday, November 28, 2010 at the Life Care Center of the South Shore in Scituate after a short period of failing health. He was born in Melrose, Massachusetts son of the late Stanford and Dora (Freeman) Acker and was raised and educated in Melrose. He has made his home in Scituate for the past 69 years. He worked first in the financial district of Boston. He then became a welder at Bethlehem Steel Company's Quincy Ship Yard during World War II working in the turret shop. One of ships that he worked on was the warship USS Salem. After the war he worked at various jobs including as a stonemason. In 1950 he went to work for Marshfield Sand and Gravel as a welder and loader operator, eventually becoming foreman. He worked there for 28 years before retiring. He was one of the original members of the Marshfield Men’s Bowling League. He was an associate member of the Marshfield VFW. He enjoyed deep sea fishing and digging clams. In his younger years he enjoyed skiing. He was the husband for 68 years of the late Mary (MacTammany) Acker. He was the father of Susan M. Painter and her husband Kenneth of Rockland, Peter B. Acker of Marshfield, Barbara A. Ferron and her husband James of Oklahoma and the late Jean R. Loveday and her husband Edward Loveday of Byfield. He was the brother of late Clyde Acker. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was also the grandfather of the late David Painter. At the request of the family there will be no visiting hours and the burial will be private.
