It is with a heavy heart and a lifetime of memories that we announce the passing of Bruce (Butch) Tipton age 70, a Vietnam Vet, hot rod enthusiast, bowling champion (in his own mind, at least), passionate hunter and the proud owner of a 1970 Dodge Super Bee that could make anyone feel like a teenager again; he was a passionate Michigan Wolverines fan—Go Blue! He passed away at home, leaving behind a legacy that can only be described as larger than life – much like the rumble of his beloved car's engine.
Born in 1954, on the South End of Columbus, Bruce was a man who truly lived life in the fast lane. He was as comfortable in his garage tinkering with engines as he was on the bowling lanes. He didn’t just throw a bowling ball; he threw his heart into everything he did. He was the biggest Michigan Wolverine fan and you know how hard that is in Columbus, OH. If you were lucky enough to know him, you probably got to hear how proud he was of his time serving in the 101st Airborne in Vietnam and his passion for jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, his love for all things Dodge, the buck that got away or the latest moments that were his life.
While his passion for hot rods and bowling was obvious, it was his heart that truly set him apart. Bruce was a quiet, soft-spoken man, but once he got to know you, you knew you had a friend for life. Whether it was offering a helping hand, cracking a joke, or simply being there when you needed him, Bruce made an impact that can’t be measured.
He is survived by his loving wife Cathy, sons: Anthony Mott, Gordon Mott, Shawn Minchin (Heather), Jason Smith (Nicci), Shawn Tipton (Amber), Jason Tipton (Danielle), Ben Tipton, and daughter Shannon Phillips (Alan). His love for his children was matched only by the pride he took in being a Papa to his grandchildren: Brandon, Carsyn, Grayson, Lilly, Addie, our newest baby Rosa, Lexie, Scotty, Ian, Josh, Jordan, JJ and Little Tony. They will carry on his legacy of laughter, love, and, of course, a slightly questionable sense of humor.
While he may have left us in body, we know that his spirit will forever be cruising the streets of Heaven, rolling down the highway with the kind of joy only a gearhead could know. He was truly one of a kind and the world is a little less loud and a little less bright without him. He will truly be missed. Feel free to wear Michigan gear if you have it.
