Bruce Perry Crandall II

BRUCE PERRY CRANDALL II, 24, loving son, family member, and friend passed away January 30, 2023. He was born in São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil on July 5, 1998. A dual national Brazilian American, he loved his heritage and remained fluent in Portuguese throughout his life. Bruce attended elementary schools in both Brazil and the United States. He went on to become an alumnus of St. Francis Episcopal Day School and Episcopal High School in Houston, Texas before going out of state for college at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Maryland. He graduated with a degree in Economics in December 2022.

When he came to America for the first time at age 5, he spoke Portuguese better than English, so they put him in an English as a Second Language class. He came home from the first day of school commenting on the teacher's ""spoiled Portuguese"" (Spanish). When he permanently moved from South America, the great passion of his childhood changed from futebol to American football, although in a pinch he would settle for anything played with an oblong ball. Rugby or Australian-rules football anyone? He was very lucky to be associated with many successful programs, playing on two Tully Bowl championship teams (the Dolphins and the Wolfpack), an undefeated St. Francis Wolves squad, and the SPSC champion Episcopal High School Knights team from his junior year. He was generally optimistic, but was always disappointed that he failed to score on the blocked punt he recovered in middle school, that the EHS Knights did not repeat as SPSC champions in his senior year, and that he never grew to an appropriate lineman size.

He was a widely traveled individual, visiting all continents except Antarctica. He especially loved visiting Morocco, where he rode a camel in the Sahara, saw a snake charmer in Marrakech, had a monkey pull his hair, and ate what he claimed was the, ""best soup of his life."" Since he was ten, he carried his lucky football with him on every trip he went. He took pictures tossing his ball at the Pyramids, the Sydney Opera House, the Taj Mahal, and various other exotic locations.

Bruce loved music. He was an avid musician who learned to play piano from his mother. He also taught himself guitar and played saxophone for the EHS band. He was very detail oriented, digging deeply into whatever currently interested him before moving on to the next topic, which he would equally devour.

He adored his pets; his Brazilian import Uruthyddy, and his rescue dog, Molly, who appeared miraculously on his doorstep in January 2014, and, despite explicit instructions from his parents, somehow managed to find her way onto his bed every night until he left for college.

Bruce loved deeply and without limits. At college, he surrounded himself with people from all races, religions, and cultures and was a global citizen who collected friends from all nations.

In Maryland, he met and fell for Roshan, who remained an important part of his life until he died. They were together for 4 years, and she featured in some of his happiest memories.

Bruce returned to Houston in February of 2022, where he lived with his parents until he passed. He is survived by his loving parents, Odila Antunes Pompeo Crandall and Donovan Crandall, his grandparents, Bruce Crandall and Onilda Antunes, his brothers Andrew Crandall and Luke Crandall, his uncles, Steven Crandall, Michael Crandall, and Rogerio Brum, and his cousins, Rebekah Crandall, Jessica Crandall, Brenda Pompeo, and Yasmin Pompeo.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2023, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Church, 7809 Shadyvilla Lane at 2:00 pm. There will be a reception at the Parish Hall immediately following the service.

A Mass of the Resurrection for Bruce was celebrated at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 9, 2023 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham, 7809 Shadyvilla Lane in Houston, Texas.
