Bruce Edward Markey, a resident of Scottsdale, AZ, and East Crooked Lake, Nevis, MN, made his transition on August 8, 2023, in the loving care of his beloved wife and Hospice of the Red River Valley at their cabin in the Northwoods.
Bruce was born on October 11, 1946, to Robert Charles and Catherine Jean (McGuigan) Markey. He attended Fargo Public Schools and graduated from Fargo Central in 1964 and from NDSU in 1968 with a B.A. in Economics. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Abilene, TX, DaNang, Vietnam, and Minot, ND, from June 1968 to June 1972. He was employed by Western States Life Insurance Company in the Fargo home office until 1981, when he joined Merril Lynch. Bruce was a financial consultant ending his career with the opening of the first Raymond James Financial Services office in Fargo, where he partnered with Jody Greuel. He was admired by his clients for his personal, thorough, and integrous attention.
He was predeceased by his son, Robert Bruce Markey; his parents; wife, Elizabeth (Overby) Markey; and his only sibling, Nancy Markey Oakley (Terry). He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Cynthia Joan (Anderson) Markey, and son, Christian (Bryce). He is also survived by four step-children, Josh, Anna, and Joe Gullekson, Scottsdale, AZ, and Kate Regan, Excelsior, MN; 8 grandchildren; nephew, Tracy Peterson, Henderson, NV; godchild, Sabrina Batalden, Minneapolis, MN; and extended family and many wonderful friends.
Bruce was a proud Fargo native and often said, "I'm one of many Bruce Markeys in the country, but the only one born in Fargo", and often recounted childhood experiences that set the stage for his life. His love of history began at the Fargo Public Library, where he would ride his bike to check out historical books with choices guided by the kind librarian. Friends and family were amazed by his ability to chronologize events in historical order. A passion for cars began when his dad would often bring home dealership cars to test drive with Bruce. Throughout the years, he enjoyed collecting and restoring classic cars. He loved the freedom Fargo provided as a child to safely walk or ride his bike anywhere, especially to Dell Hall Field to play baseball and tennis. His love for baseball continued when he coached son Christian's Crosslake baseball team. Bruce's love for the game of golf began when his Uncle Al took him to Edgewood in Fargo and continued throughout his lifetime, adding wonderful friends in the AZ and Fargo area. Since the pandemic, a highlight for Bruce was a weekly Zoom call with his two best Agassiz Junior High buddies, Mike and Jim. Some of his best days were spent with his grandchildren, who called him Papa, playing games and teaching them life skills. Some of Bruce's happiest times were spent outdoors with Cindy at their cabin working and planting native trees and plants. The world has lost a beautiful soul.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Homeless Youth Connection in Phoenix, or Environmental Defense Fund.
