Burke Casari Obituary
March 10, 1935 - December 6, 2025
Burke E. Casari, 90, of Lincoln, passed away at home on Dec. 6, 2025. Burke, the youngest of three brothers, was born March 10, 1935 to Herman and Josephine Casari.
Burke is survived by two sisters-in-law, Kristin Casari (Omaha) and Joanie Casari (Chillicothe, Ohio); eight nieces and nephews, Carol Casari Smith, Sharon Casari DeVoss, Connie Casari Reddicliffe, Edwin Casari, William Casari, Kate Casari Bozarth, Rebecca Rhodes Gubar, Will Rhodes, and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Rhodes Casari, and his brothers, Allan Casari and Robert Casari.
Burke's life was varied and rich. He grew up in Lincoln and graduated from the University of Nebraska. He served as a U.S. Marine. He volunteered in Sierra Leone for the Peace Corps and taught high school English in Chicago. He was a longtime administrator for the Nebraska Department of Health. In the evenings, he did research on the early exploration of Africa and specifically on explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton and his wife, Isabel. He engaged in scholarly research for the love of it, not for public attention or professional advancement. He was kind, independent, and a man of integrity. He could tell a good story and deliver a zinger in a quiet way that would leave the whole room laughing. His family and many friends will always miss him.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home in Lincoln. Donations in Burke's memory can be made to the NU Foundation (Daily Nebraskan Editorial Support Fund) at www.nufoundation.org.
