Services for C.L. Backman, Jr., 81, will be held 4pm Friday, August 10, 2007, in Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. Vance Fossum. Interment will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. Honorary Pallbearers will be Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Council. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8pm this (THURSDAY) evening in Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2920 Pella Avenue, West Columbia, SC 29169.

C. L. Backman, Jr. was taken to Heaven, Wednesday, August 8, 2007, after a valiant fight against cancer. He was born April 1, 1926 to C. L. Backman, Sr. and Nettie Ferrell Backman. He served in the Navy during WWII and returned home to marry the love of his life Margaret Price of Gilbert. They together were founding members of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in West Columbia where he remained an active member. He was a former brick mason prior to going into the lumber business which he owned and operated, Backman Lumber Company.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret P. Backman of Cayce; sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Debbie Backman of Prosperity, Harold and Carroll Backman of Charlotte, NC, and Bruce and Nancy Backman of Cayce; sisters, Naomi Blalock and Erlene Deese; brother, Harvel “Pete” Backman; grandchildren, Margaret and Tommy Hook, Jeff and Holly Backman, Randy and Kristina Backman, Robin and Robin Lynn Backman; great grandchildren, Grace Hook, Hannah Backman, Cory Hook and Bryson Backman. Mr. Backman was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, his sister, Allee Shumpert and brothers, Frank Backman and Ray Backman.
