Melvin Whitaker, 96, of Newburgh, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 21, 2025 at his home. He was born June 18, 1929 in Belton, KY to the late Comma (Blake) and Jay Thomas Whitaker.

Melvin worked for Inland Container where he retired after 43 years. He was a member of Formation Church. Melvin liked spending time outdoors whether it be doing yardwork and mowing or camping with family and friends. Melvin was an avid fisherman and hunter who enjoyed turkey, quail and deer hunting.

Melvin is survived by his sons, Daniel (Loretta) Whitaker and Jeff (Tina) Whitaker; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy "June" (Saddler) Whitaker; daughter, Joan Moore; brothers, Sherman Whitaker, James R. Whitaker and Jay Thomas Whitaker; and sisters, Pauline Kirkman and Maggie Pogue.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 26, 2025 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. A Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Eric Pope officiating.

Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. at (Old) Jackson Cemetery, KY State Highway 1163, Greenville, KY 42345.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Newburgh Food Bank, 625 Frame Road, Newburgh, IN 47630 or Formation Church, 303 N. 5th St., Chandler, IN 47610.
