Caleb "Red" Winter Massey, 40, passed away at home surrounded by family on December 30, 2025, after a long illness.
Red was born June 9, 1985, in
Dallas, Texas. He was predeceased by his father, Terry Massey, and is survived by his mother, Christina Massey, his siblings, Gretchen Massey, Kineta Massey, and Forrest Massey, and his wife of 17 years, Cat Tatsch.
From a young age, Red was endlessly curious and creative, diving headfirst into interests and hobbies as quickly as he discovered them. Among his many interests were bird watching, dinosaurs, ray guns, mythology, board games, history, trains, geology, astronomy, cryptids, and countless others. Sharing his interests with family & friends throughout his life were some of his most treasured memories.
His creativity led him to a career in theater as a prop designer and run crew for Dallas Children's Theater (DCT). As a prop designer for more than 30 shows, he made many fantastical pieces that were an integral part of bringing the magic of live theater to life. During his years at DCT, he met his wife and countless friends who brought laughter and love into his life in abundance.
He later started his own business, Red Ranger Ray Guns, making sci-fi and steampunk-inspired ray guns from found materials. He called them "art you can play with" and would encourage people to touch & pick up the pieces, strike a pose and take a picture, and just generally have fun. Over many years of art shows and markets, he was able to share his joy of whimsy and imagination with many and often spoke of how much those connections meant to him.
Red spent much of his time outdoors where he was happiest, whether it was going on a walk at White Rock Lake, bird watching at one of his many birding spots, or having a picnic and playing bocce ball. His favorite bird was the Mockingbird, and he loved to hear a bachelor's song of many calls. His favorite tree was the Cottonwood, and he loved how the leaves would turn silvery in the autumn and how they sounded like gently rushing water when a breeze would blow through. He loved rainstorms and the sounds of distant thunder as the storm approached.
