Candace "Candy" Lee Wakefield passed away peacefully on March 6, 2023, at the age of 72. Candy was born May 17, 1950, to the late Tracey and Shirley Lindsey in St. Louis, MO. The beautiful dark-haired teenaged girl would meet a handsome young man named Bobby while cruising the Dairy Queen and on December 2, 1967, the two would walk down the aisle at North Avenue Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Georgia in what would be the beginning of a 52-year marriage.
Candy worked proudly and successfully for the Humane Society of Lowndes County where she combined her love for animals and people and touched many lives, both furry and not. Animals were her passion; especially cats and she did not hesitate feeding every stray cat in the neighborhood. She also enjoyed working for the Census Bureau and the local election polls. Candy was a very devoted member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Valdosta, GA where she served as a session member and volunteered faithfully with the Food Pantry. She adored her fellow church members and they were truly part of her family.
Candy was affectionately known as the "mouth of the south" by her family due to her uncanny ability to speak to everyone she met. Not only did she have the gift of gab, she had a way of making people feel at ease and formed strong bonds with nearly everyone she met. The beach was in Candy's soul. She never felt more at home than with sand between her toes – especially on Jekyll Island where she and her beloved husband shared so many beautiful memories.
Candy is preceded in death by her husband John Robert "Bob" Wakefield; mother Shirley Jo Tomasello; father Tracey Lindsey, Sr.; and step-father Andrew "Tom" Tomasello.
Candy is survived by son John (Debbie) Wakefield of Charlotte, NC; son Michael (Susan) Wakefield of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter Heather (Bert) Waldrep of Madison, FL; son Matthew (Sheena) Wakefield of Murfreesboro, TN; grandchildren Brandon Wakefield, Spenser Wakefield, Cameron Wakefield, Rebekah Nance, Zachery Waldrep, Robert Waldrep, Emma Wakefield, Julian Wakefield, Deacon Wakefield, and Logan Wakefield; brother Tracey Lindsey Jr; and kitties JJ Wakefield and Truffle Wakefield; and many other beloved family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday April 1, 2023, at 2pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Valdosta Georgia, officiated by Reverend Lindsey Williams. Lunch will be served immediately following the service. The scattering of ashes will follow at a later date. Flowers are welcome. Contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Lowndes County and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.
