Carl Bongiovanni Obituary

Carl Paul Bongiovanni passed away peacefully on Jan. 6, 2026, at 94. He was under the compassionate care of his caregivers at Longwood and, in his final days as throughout his life was surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Natalie Sokulski Bongiovanni; daughters, Michele Bender (John) and Paula Wight (John); and daughter-in-law, Jean Romauldi Bongiovanni. He was sadly preceded in death by his adored son and namesake, Carl A. Bongiovanni (2017); and by his siblings, Chester Bongiovanni, John Bongiovanni, Grace Grill, and Margaret Cicarelli. Carl was born to Italian immigrant parents into humble beginnings. With his older brothers serving in World War II and his father hospitalized, he was called upon at a young age to manage the family business maturing him beyond his years and affirming that he would always be his own boss. As a young husband and father, Carl made the pivotal decision to found Bon Tool Co., which has grown into a leading manufacturer of professional construction tools and is now managed by his grandson in its third generation. Never one to call attention to himself, he often said, "The harder I worked, the luckier I got." And he acknowledged his greatest stroke of luck was marrying Natalie. Together they built a beautiful life, supporting one another while raising three children. Over the years they formed many lasting friendships and enjoyed countless golf outings with their friends of Churchill Valley Country Club, where he was an active member for many years. Carl enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years and golfing throughout his life. He celebrated two holes-in-one, though he took the most pleasure laughing at a good golf joke. He was rarely shy about sharing his opinion and always quick to offer his support. He will be remembered for his straightforward, even-keeled approach to nearly all things in life, his honesty, his sense of humor, and his deep devotion to his family. Carl lived the true American Dream. Though he did not have the opportunity to attend college himself, he generously ensured that each of his children and grandchildren did and he proudly wore the ties of each of their universities. Carl was blessed with nine grandchildren, all raised in Pittsburgh, which allowed for frequent family gatherings and many opportunities for him to share his words of wisdom with the next generation: Tom Bender, Kate Bender (Luis Paz), Maggie Bender Vega (Sebastian), John Bongiovanni (Katie), Dana Bongiovanni Werner (Brian), Emily Bongiovanni (Tom Leech), Jack Wight, Rachel Wight, and Teddy Wight. He was the great-grandfather of 10: Colton and Hailey Bongiovanni; Henry, Sam, and Caroline Werner; Matias and Felix Vega; Mila and Luca Paz; and Amelia Leech. Visitation is from 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026, at BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND ALTERNATIVE SERVICES INC., at 421 Allegheny Ave. in Oakmont.
