I worked with Carl at Navmar. He always had a smile on his face and was always in a great mood. to Carl.

I am deeply saddened by our tragic loss of Carl. I still remember well when he was little. He was apparently unafraid of the dark. When at night he started climing out of his crib to go exploring the house, our father put a stop to this by placing a removable lid over the crib. Then when morning arrived, he would call out, "Mother, come and take the wid off." His classification scheme for pancakes went like this: "Giant-sized, man-sized, medium-sized, small-sized and criticized." He was always good company on account of his intelligence, especially having become a well-read, broad-minded scholar in his later years. His reading included The Washington Post, Harper's Magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, The Economist and Scientific American. His physical courage was remarkable. We both belonged to a skydiving club in the early seventies. One time he had to cut away from a main-chute malfunction prior to pulling the ripcord on his reserve. His response to all of this after having landed safely under that reserve? Merely a proudly beaming grin of triumph and excitement on his face. He often had a quick wit. One time when we were at the city zoo observing a timberwolf trotting around forlornly in its cage with its tongue haning out, I remarked that it always seemed to take the same path. But then when it deviated shortly after this, he resorted to a musical analogy: "It has a theme and and variations." Carl was one of my best friends ever. I will miss him always for the rest of my life.

Carl was truly an inspiration to everyone he met. We have shared so much; St. Ann's, surviving teenagers, our neighborhood, etc. There is not a single negative word anyone could speak about him. The entire family is a example to others. Our prayers are with you in this difficult time and we know Carl is experiencing true peace and reward. Love to all, George, Rita, James, and Rita Crowley

Carl was married to one of my lifelong best friends. We grew up in Denver but both of us ended up living in other states.. We have maintained our friendship and been able to see each other through the years. All you had to do is look at the way Carl looked at Mo and you could see, and feel the love. That was good enough for me, I knew my treasured friend was in good hands! The most surprising thing to me was the fact that Maureen had 5 children, I never would have predicted that, she is an amazing mother and does it with such ease! Carl could not have been a more perfect partner, what a special relationship they had. My heart breaks for the whole family, but especially Maureen, looking to the days ahead and knowing how much she will miss him every minute of every day. He was her life, her one true, forever love. I will be praying for the entire family, Carl will be missed by all who knew him, he was a very good man, husband and father.

I first met Carl when we were 10 year old kids growing up in Middleton, Wisconsin. Attended Middleton High together where Carl was a standout in our class - an excellent student, a 3 sport letterman in football, basketball and track, and also the main lead in our senior class play 12 Angry Jurors. We went on to UW - Madison where we lived together one year and helped each other through the mysteries of calculus. Then marriages and families and careers happened and our interactions became more infrequent. When we did get together we´d reminisce about our past, talk about our current lives, our families and current events. Carl was always engaging, funny, and well informed. Of course I was impressed with his Navy career, and when I asked him what made him a successful test pilot he said with his self-deprecating sense of humor something to effect of "I have a very sensitive rear end". Meaning he could feel and communicate very subtle anomalies in how our most advanced planes reacted in extreme situations. He made me laugh, he made me think, and he made me care. A true example of a life well lived. What a horrible shock it was to learn of his passing. I know I am going to miss him and will think of him often.
My sincerest condolences to Maureen, to the five children Carl loved so much, and to Carl´s brothers and sister.

I am from the town where Carl grew up, Middleton, WI. My Dad, Leo Simms was one of Carl's BIGGEST fans...Leo was Carl's football and track coach...both sports, Carl excelled at and was a champion! Leo kept track of his favorite athletes and Carl was right at the top of that list. Leo passed away in 2011but even in those later years, he talked about Carl and how proud he was of him. He kept track of Carl's life thru Carl's Middleton friends and classmates...Carl's fellow high school Champions. RIP Carl.
