C. Randal Gardner, devoted family man, proud tradesman, and respected community and labor leader, passed away peacefully at the age of 93.
He is survived and dearly missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Celinda (née Jacome), and his children Randy (Andrea) and Celinda (Chris). He will be forever cherished by his four grandchildren: Christopher Jr., Emma, Joseph, and Amelia.
Born on September 26, 1932 in Jacksonville, Florida, Randal lived a life defined by service. After joining United Association Local 234's apprenticeship program in 1952, he enlisted in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Corporal. After returning home, he continued to work in the trade, finding both purpose and community at Local 234. Answering the call to leadership, Randal was elected in 1963 to serve as Business Agent and then in 1967 as Business Manager, spending the next twenty years in that position, dedicating himself to advocating for skilled tradespeople and their families.
Randal's commitment to his community extended well beyond the jobsite. He served with distinction as Chairman of the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship, the Florida State Apprenticeship Council, and as a board member of both the United Way and the Mayor's Economic Development Council. Appointed by two Florida Governors-Reubin Askew and Bob Graham-Randal also served on the Jacksonville Port Authority, where he was later elected Chairman of the Board in 1981. His participation on numerous additional civic and governmental committees reflected his steady judgment and principled leadership, which helped guide critical economic, educational, and policy advancements for his hometown.
Recognized nationally for his integrity and record of achievement, Randal was called to serve in the United Association's General Office, ultimately rising to the position of Assistant General President. His forward-looking leadership and unwavering dedication to working men and women strengthened the trades and elevated the dignity and value of labor across the country. A tireless advocate for fairness and opportunity, Randal leaves a lasting legacy-reflected in the livelihoods he safeguarded, the institutions he strengthened, and the communities he uplifted.
Above all, Randal was a family man. For 55 years, he and Celinda-his "Shorty"-were inseparable partners, a model of love, loyalty, and teamwork. He was an adoring and involved grandfather-"Papa Frita" to his oldest grandchild, Chris Jr., his beloved "Partner". He delighted in ice cream trips to "The New Place" with Emma, and beamed with pride as they discussed her future doctoral studies. He was crazy about his "Main Man" Joey and never missed a chance to show videos of him drumming or wrestling. And his youngest granddaughter, Amelia, whom he was endlessly proud of as his shining tennis star and SweetFrog companion.
Randal's life stands as a testament to leadership rooted in selfless service, integrity, and compassion. His influence endures in the organizations he strengthened, the people he mentored, and the family he loved so deeply.
