Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 22, 2011.
SILVER LAKE –Carl Joseph Mader, MD died peacefully at home on April 22 after having recently celebrated his 89th birthday with family and friends in Silver Lake. Dr. Mader was born on April 18, 1922 in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia to George Peter and Gladys Westhaver Mader. He joined the Canadian Army at age16 and was sent to England to fight in WWII and later helped liberate Holland from the Nazi Regime. Following the war, Captain Mader spent two years with the Army of Occupation in Germany. His officer training took place at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, England. In 1980, he and fellow Princess Louise Dragoon Guards returned to Holland at the invitation of the Dutch Government to receive awards and celebrate the anniversary of the liberation. In 1942 he returned to Nova Scotia to finish high school and attend Dalhousie University, earning his degree in Medicine. While in medical school he met beautiful, young nurse, Jessica Meikle, who later became his bride. The couple moved to Akron for his residency in Internal Medicine at St. Thomas Hospital. While there, Dr. Mader held the title of Chief Resident and founded the Utilization Review Committee. He established his practice in Cuyahoga Falls, eventually retiring in 2004. He spent much of his retirement attending medical lectures, traveling with Jessica and enjoying their 9 grandchildren. Dr. Mader was a fixture at the Cuyahoga Falls YMCA. He was an avid racquetball and tennis player, enjoyed playing poker, hosting parties and playing hockey and baseball with his children. He and Jessica summered at their home in Mader’s Cove, Nova Scotia where they spent their days on the water and evenings entertaining friends and family on their deck. Dr. Mader was known for his quick wit, great cooking and stimulating conversation. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jessica, and their four children, Pamela (Dr. Barret) Lessenberry of Glasgow, KY, Roger Mader of Manhattan, Scott Mader of San Diego and Valerie (Patrick Larson) Mader of Silver Lake; grandchildren, MacLean, Palmer, Hewett and Creighton Lessenberry, Cole and Everett Mader, Fletcher, Alistair and Josephine Larson.
