Carl Mullins Obituary

Carl Lee Mullins, Sr., 87, of Mount Jackson, passed away March 28, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by family.

Carl was born April 19, 1938, in Oakwood, Virginia, and was a son of the late Walter Mullins and Eva Perkins Mullins. He graduated from Garden High School in 1956 and then worked in Northern Virginia for a number of years. Carl worked for the United States Naval Research Lab, Melpar, Fairchild Industries, and SJ Industries in electronics, specializing in solar panel construction for satellites. After leaving Northern Virginia, he and his wife owned and operated Mullins Market in Mount Jackson for 25 years. Prior to retirement, he worked at Merillat in Mount Jackson for seven years.

On Jan. 26, 1959, Carl married the former Kay Frances Matney, his loving wife of 67 years.

In addition to his wife, Carl is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Mullins Heffernan and husband, Jim, of Penn Laird; two grandsons, Christian Mullins and Tyler Fogle; and two granddaughters, Cynthia Mullins and Olivia Heffernan.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a son, Carl Lee Mullins, Jr; a daughter, Teresa Mullins Fogle; a grandson, Carl Lee Mullins III; three brothers, Herman Mullins, Wesley Mullins, and William Mullins; and a sister, Georgia Hale.

A gifted athlete, Carl played baseball, basketball, and football in high school and went on to spend several years coaching his son in all three sports. One of the highlights of his time coaching was taking his Little League team to the Virginia State Little League Championship in Luray, Virginia, in 1971.

In his later years, Carl enjoyed watching a variety of sports and following his favorite team, the Washington Redskins. He also spent many enjoyable hours working in his yard, reading multiple newspapers daily, and reading and watching Westerns. Most of all, he loved being a grandfather to his five grandchildren and was affectionately known as "Pop," a name given to him by his first grandchild.

There will be a private graveside service at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association, or a charity of one's own choosing.
