Carl Duane Scheumack, Jr., 75, passed from the arms of his family to the arms of his Lord on June 14, 2024. Duane was the oldest of three boys born to Carl Duane Scheumack Sr. and Billie Julainne Scheumack in Victoria, Texas. Duane graduated from Allen Military Academy where he played both football and the drums.
After high school, Duane enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served gallantly in Vietnam from January 1969 to January 1970. During his service, Duane earned the following medals and honors: the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze stars. Upon his return to the States, Duane joined the Houston Police Department where he attained the rank of detective. After serving his country, Duane started his lengthy career in construction and real estate serving the communities of Rockport, Victoria, and El Campo.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Duane was active and involved where he lived, always serving others. A cowboy at heart, Duane was a member of and Competed in the American Quarter-Horse Association from 1984-86. When that was not exciting enough, Duane became a private pilot and instructor pilot, including flying as a Colonel in the Confederate Air Force. Duane was a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge - Post BPOE 1749 where he twice served as the Exalted Ruler and later as the Past District Deputy to the Grand Exalted Ruler. Later in life, he was a member of the Key Allegro Men's Club, served on the Rockport Airport Board, and the Wharton County Appraisal Board, where he served as Vice-Chairman.
Duane was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. Always the competitor, in 2010, Duane completed a Super Grand Slam for fishing. That same year, Duane began running in half marathons and other events. All told, Duane finished more than fifty races before he hung up his running shoes.
Duane is survived by his loving wife, Cay, and four children: Julainne (Jason) Mills, Chris (Annie) Scheumack, Mark (Katie) Mayer and Geoff (Sandi) Mayer; nine grandchildren - Chloe, David, Sidney, Henry, Mason, Barrett, Donovan, Christian and Landen; and two brothers - John (Vanessa) Scheumack and Bill Scheumack.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, 20 June 2024, at the Elks Lodge in El Campo, TX at 4:00 PM. Family will start receiving visitors at 3:00 PM. Military honors will be provided under the auspices of the American Legion Post 251.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to El Campo BPOE #1749 Scholarship Fund (PO Box 287, El Campo TX 77437) or your favorite charitable organization.
