Carl “Sid” Sidney Howard Jr., 89, of Waverly, WV passed away January 2, 2026. He was the son of the late Carl S. Howard Sr. and Madge McKinley Howard.
Sid graduated from Williamstown High School in 1955 where he met his future wife. In the late 1950’s he owned and operated Park Superette and built and operated Sid’s Dairy Bar both in Williamstown. He was a successful entrepreneur having owned several franchises including Sparkle Wash, Tidy Car, Aamco Transmission, and Butler Manufacturing steel building. He was the owner of Valley Development Company which he founded in 1964 and Brawny Built storage buildings. He was a successful home builder developing and building new homes in Garden Estates and 33rd and 34th streets in Parkersburg and Sherwood drive in Williamstown, as well as many other homes around the Mid-Ohio Valley. He built his own house on the Ohio river in 1972 in Waverly. Then in 1995 he built Judy her dream house on the Ohio river.
He was a lifelong member and past elder of the Waverly Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Waverly Fire Department, a 44 year member of the Waverly Lions Club, and a past member of the Mid-Ohio Valley Home Builders Association. He also served in the National Guard.
Sid is survived by his wife of 67 years, Judy Deering Howard; his children, Craig Howard, Kim Freshwater, and Lisa Howard; and his grandchildren, Destiny Freshwater Burdette, Chaz Howard, Joshua Palmer, and Sydney Palmer McDonald.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Christopher Scott Howard; two brothers, Warden Howard (Martha) and Dick Howard (Billie); and one sister, Carol Fogle (Richard). He and Judy had a close relationship with his only sister and her husband. The four of them frequently took trips together.
Donations may be made to the Waverly Bethel Presbyterian Church or the Waverly Volunteer Fire Department.
Funeral Service will take place Friday, January 9, 2026 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in Vienna, beginning at 1:00 PM with Pastor Elizabeth Campbell-Maleke, Reverend Kenneth Calebaugh, and Reverend Brady Stephens officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 3:00-7:00 PM at the funeral home, as well as Friday from 11:00 AM until time of service. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
