Carl Ellsworth Smith, age 78, of Aberdeen, Ohio, passed away at his residence on Tuesday night, December 9, 2025.

He is survived by his wife, Catharine (Potter) of 43 years.

He was born October 3, l947 in Franklin, a son of the late Fred and Isabelle Smith.

Carl attended Franklin Area High School. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1967 through 1968, stationed at the DMZ as a team wireman.

He was employed in the construction & trucking industries; most notably his work at PennDOT, and Brown & Root Construction.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in the yard, woodworking, and spending time with his family.

He is also survived by his daughter, Sara (Jim) Gordon and his grandson Ryan of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; his son, Brett (Amanda) Smith and his granddaughter Autumn, of Dover, Kentucky. Also surviving are his sisters, Maxine Lehman of Franklin and Susan De Maison of Conneautville; and his brother, Blaine (Sandra) Smith of Florida.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Isabelle Smith; his sisters, Jane Gibson, Nancy Johnson, and Julia Luther; and his brothers, Bryan Dean, Keith Smith, and David Smith.

Visitation will be held Saturday (December 13) from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. in Hile-Best Funeral Home, 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Bruce Judy, pastor of Rockland United Methodist Church, officiating. The V.E.T.S. Honor Guard will accord military honors at the beginning of the service. Private interment will follow in the Rockland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rockland Cemetery, and mailed to: Pearl Potter (Secretary), 3842 Kennerdell, PA 16374.
