Carl Strobel Obituary

Carl William Strobel, of Annapolis, a deeply beloved husband and father, passed away on July 8 at age 89. Born in Lake Placid, NY, and raised in Texas and California, Strobel led an adventurous life of integrity. He graduated from El Monte (California) High School and the University of Southern California. He was proudest of his US Navy service and multiple combat tours in Vietnam. Strobel helped save countless American servicemen's lives, flying over North Vietnam aboard EC-121 "Willy Victor" electronic surveillance aircraft with Detachment Bravo, VQ-1 Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron. Strobel also had postings in Japan; Okinawa; Fort Meade; the Philippines; and England. He retired with the rank of Commander. Settling in Anne Arundel County, Strobel became a successful businessman and a community leader in Annapolis' Wardour neighborhood. His structured cabling company, FiberPlus, is in its 34th year of operation. His generosity knew few bounds: adopting dogs that needed homes, giving to charity whenever asked, sharing his war stories and his love of technology. He never lost his enthusiasm for life, curiosity or good humor. He was, at various times, an amateur radio operator, home computer enthusiast and hot air balloon pilot. Carl was preceded in death by his eldest son, Kenneth. He is survived by his beloved wife, Thora; first wife, Shirley; sons Warren and Richard; stepchildren Rachel, Roger, Anna and John; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be announced. Donations may be made to the Kenneth Strobel Endowment, c/o Howard Community College Educational Foundation.

From language school in D.C. to stations in the Far East, Carl always kept in touch. We celebrated many a birthday and toasted the New Year with champagne, old stories and good friends. Thanks for taking us soaring high in the sky in your balloon. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
