CARL L. STURGILL, age 88 of Athens, Tenn. passed away Thursday, August 14, 2025, at his residence. He was a native Solway, Tenn., former resident of Southern Michigan, former resident of Meigs County, Tenn. and resident of McMinn County since 1959, a son of the late John J and Myrtle Johnson Sturgill and preceded in death by his wife: Peggy Ann Norton Sturgill, Brothers Frank Sturgill, Jack Sturgill, Joe Sturgill, Henry Sturgill, Ray Sturgill, and Dan Sturgill, Sister: Lois Armstrong, He retired from The City of Athens as Director of Administration and Emergency Services after 32 years of service. Former employee of the Dept. of Agriculture. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Tabernacle. He was a member of various clubs and organizations and a Ham Radio operator.
Surviving: Daughter: Dana (Bryant) Dean of Cleveland, Tenn., Sons: Greg (Lisa) Sturgill of Etowah, Tenn., Mike Shannon of Cleveland, Tenn, Scott (Lisa) Shannon of Guntersville, Ala., Pat (Denise) Shannon of Knoxville Tenn., Sister-in-law: Alline Thomas Sturgill of Riceville, Tenn. Five Grandchildren, Taylor Shannon, Meaghan (Thomas) Richards, Lauren (Jordon) Farris, Kyle (Courtney) Shannon, Reid (Riley) Shannon, Livie Lynn Shannon, Three Great-Grandchildren: Laney Farris, Parker Shannon and Hayden Shannon, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 7:00 p.m. Saturday, August 23, 2025, in Fairview Baptist Tabernacle in Sweetwater with Rev. Jason Roberts officiating. Interment will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday in Pisgah Cemetery. Active pallbearers Greg Sturgill, Mike Shannon, Scott Shannon, Pat Shannon, Dean Bryant, Kyle Shannon, and Reid Shannon. The family will receive friends from 4-7 Saturday in the church.
