Carl Ullman Obituary

Carl Tracy Ullman
On Saturday, January 28, 2023, Carl Tracy Ullman, beloved husband and father of three, passed away at his home in Ridgefield, Connecticut following a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was 74 years old.
Carl was born on November 10, 1948 to Myron and June Ullman. He grew up in Canfield, Ohio, and was the second of seven children. Carl spent a year studying abroad in Argentina after high school, sparking a lifelong love of the Spanish language. After graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Business School, Carl pursued a career in business. He met his wife, Kay, in New York City, and they later settled in Ridgefield.
Endlessly curious, Carl loved to read, learn, and talk to people. He was interested in everyone he met. Carl found a true calling later in life when he began teaching. He loved his students, and the opportunity to help them along their journey however he could. He had a knack for understanding what support each individual kid needed, and delighted in helping them learn in a fun, compassionate way.
While Carl will be remembered for what he taught us, he will also be remembered for how he made people feel. Carl had a way of using humor and kindness to make all those around him feel at ease. Those who loved Carl are blessed with many wonderful memories. We will remember him joyfully singing in the church choir, playing cards with family at the cottage on his beloved Kahshe Lake in Gravenhurst, Canada, and zipping through the French countryside in a rented car.
Carl is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Kay Spiegel Ullman, three daughters, Lara (Chas Servotke), Erika, and Chelsea (Morgan Cross), two grandchildren, Zack and Serenity, five of his siblings, Mike (Cathy), Chris Stubbins (Paul), Curt (Paula), Greg, Gretchen Tisone (Mark), and a whole host of nieces and nephews. Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Myron and June, and his sister Debbie.
A Memorial Service in Celebration of Carl's Life will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 12:00 PM at Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church; 207 Main Street, Ridgefield. Interment will be held privately; there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made online to Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church, a community Carl cherished. Kane Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.

I have only just seen this news of my second cousin Carl. I first met him in 1957, when I was seven years old (he was already eight) and I spent many weekends in his company - and that of his brothers and sister - in native Canfield Ohio. He was a lively and humorous boy and we hit it off at once, almost as if we were brothers ourselves. In the following years we gradually lost touch, all the more so as he made his life in the United States, while I disappeared off to Europe never to return to live in the US full time. I am deeply sorry to learn of his passing, which leaves a small, but very significant, hole in the fabric of my life - I must content myself with my memories of him as a bright, entertaining and intelligent presence in my early life - I didn't, until now, realize how much I missed him.
