Carla Hirst Wiltenburg

Carla Hirst Wiltenburg, of Briarcliff Manor, born on January 28, 1949, passed away on September 22, 2024 of acute leukemia. Carla was the loving wife of David, beloved mother of Rachel and Peter, cherished grandmother of Liam, Vivian, and Henry, adored sister of Donna, as well as a favorite aunt to many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
While earning her BA in sociology from Syracuse University Carla left the United States for the first time to spend a year in London, where she met David, the love of her life. During that year, Carla and Dave discovered Europe in a "clapped out" mini, which needed a push to get on the channel ferry and somehow made it over the Alps. From this foundation of discovery and adventure Carla and Dave built their life.
Carla's appreciation of history and architectural beauty led her to earn a master's degree in historic preservation from Columbia University. With this knowledge and passion she restored a 19th century farmhouse in Briarcliff Manor. She, David, and her parents did much of the work with their own hands. Over the course of nearly 40 years, 340 Elm Road transformed from a squirrel-infested tear-down to a beautiful and welcoming haven for family and friends. The heart of Christmas for her family and beloved friends.
Carla was ever generous with her friendship. Her many friends will remember her excellent comedic timing, her long-distance companionship by phone, and her readiness to show up and give a helping hand.
Carla's love and devotion for her family was limitless. Her priority was always the wellbeing of those closest to her, no matter what challenge she was facing herself.
She is dearly missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at 2 p.m. at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 201 Scarborough Road, Briarcliff Manor, New York, with fellowship after at 340 Elm Road, Briarcliff.
