Our dearest friend Carlo, there isn't a day that you don't cross our minds and Sunday's are more than others, it's been a while since we have came to page. Reading all these messages reminds me of the day we found out about your death. I made some rice and pico de gallo the other night and we just started talking about how you loved my Mexican cooking lol, we have two boys now since you always asked when we were having kids...crazy huh?! I didn't know Carlo personally, but was at the Kabul base on the day of his passing. I think of that day often and am truly sorry for your loss. Thinking of Carlo this Memorial Day, and will always remember his sacrifice for our country. God Bless.

Good Morning, I was one of the two trauma surgeons who cared for Carlo at the Theatre Hospital in Afghanistan. I wanted your family to know that he was surrounded by so many skilled and caring people that day. We tried so hard to save him. I think of him often, as I do all of the others who gave their lives to protect our families and our way of life here at home. Those of us who participated in his care that winter morning still talk about that day, and we still remember Carlo.

I never met you in life… only death.
I have read every word written here for you and about you, and I feel their pain.
You were my first combat death. We worked so hard to save you, but in the end it was not to be. I was your trauma anesthesia provider… I was there with you from the time you rolled through the door at the Craig Joint Theater Hospital at Bagram, until we had exhausted every resource, and we had given you everything that we had. When it was over, there were so many tears shed for you.
Everyday when I step into an operating room, I do so with the memory of 17 January 2009. That memory, a little less painful now, reminds me to do my very best!
Even today I can see the tattoos on your arm… beautiful! I know they miss you.
