Carlos "Charlie" Juan Ortiz was born on May 24th, 1959, to Vincent Ortiz Soto and Paula Rivas Ortiz in Lakewood, NJ. One of twelve children, he was known for being full of energy, loving to laugh and always being the life of the party. In 1978 he married his high school sweetheart, Mildred Martinez. Charlie and Millie celebrated their 43rd anniversary this past November. Charlie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He truly loved his family and enjoyed all the time he got to spend with them, both in recreation and in worship.
Charlie worked for Conrail in Kearny for over 5 years then for Cablevision Corporation for over 20 years. He earned a good reputation as a dedicated employee and a hard worker. In his time off he was always willing to lend a hand to friends in need. He loved fixing cars, going fishing, camping in his RV, dancing, playing dominoes and card games and watching football or baseball
Charlie enjoyed reading and studying the bible, learning how he could have a personal relationship with God. He became one of Jehovah's Witnesses, symbolizing his dedication to Jehovah God by water baptism on August 1st, 2015. That day was especially meaningful because he was baptized along with his grandson Giovanni as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Charlie enjoyed having a full share in his ministry telling others the good news about God's Kingdom and working alongside his spiritual brothers and sisters.
Even after being diagnosed with ALS in August of 2021, Charlie continued to share in worship with his family and congregation for as long as he was able. His faith in God's promises as recorded in the bible helped him to remain calm and show courage in the face of this devastating illness. He loved to reflect on the beautiful future described in Jehovah's Word such as prophecy found in the book of Isaiah, Chapter 33, verse 24 which talks about a time when "no resident will say: 'I am sick."
Charlie is survived by his wife, Mildred and their three children; their two daughters; Kellie Ann Cevilkewich and her husband Daniel Robert and Sonia Isabel Velez and her husband Luis Antonio; and their son Carlos Juan Ortiz Jr. Charlie is survived by his seven grandchildren; Giovanni and Jeremy Perez, Natalie, Isaiah and Isabel Velez and Astin and Cadence Ortiz. He is also survived by seven of his eleven siblings: Lucy, Migdalia, Lydia, Carmen, Gloria, Jimmy, and Jose. He is predeceased by four of his siblings, Leticia, Francis, Vincent, and Elsie.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022, from 12:00pm - 3:00pm at Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd Bayville, NJ 08721. A memorial talk will also be given via Zoom video conference on Sunday, January 23, 2022, at 2:00pm. Please Contact the family for more information.
