Carlton Ellis Greene, 78, entered his peace on August 24, 2025, after a prolonged illness. Carl was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who lived for joy. He loved people and developed many lasting friendships over the years. Carl was born on February 18, 1947, in Washington, DC. During his youth, Carl became a rail enthusiast and began collecting models. He also became a lifelong Washington Redskin football fan, attending home games with his dad. Carl graduated from Western High School in 1965 and attended Ottawa University, earning a Bachelor's degree in physics. At Ottawa, he met and married Elaine June Cooper. After graduation, he taught math and science classes for three years at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas. Elaine and Carl had two sons, Carlton Eric Greene and Matthew Cooper Greene, before divorcing in 2004. In October 2009, he married Kathryn Ann Green and they lived happily together in White Plains, Maryland. Carl had an impressive career at the Internal Revenue Service. He joined the service in 1973 as a computer programmer in the Examination division when computing was a new profession. He eventually became Chief, Individual Statistical Computing Section for Statistics of Income, where he led the automation of the first system to collect statistical data from individual tax returns. He managed a team of economists and statisticians and coordinated with two programming teams and ten service center statistical editing teams nationwide. He loved his job and all the people with whom he worked, retiring in 2007. He lived life to the fullest and loved being with family and friends. Some of his happiest moments were driving his 1968 bottle green Firebird fast down country roads; playing Atari games with his sons; driving the work carpool from Springfield, VA, to Washington, DC; going to rock concerts, beginning with The Beatles first U.S. concert; playing ping pong, volleyball, and Risk with friends; travelling and dancing with Kathryn; and spending time with his granddaughters especially on "Grandpa and Gigi Days." As an active member of La Plata United Methodist Church, Carl volunteered in several ministries. He was also a fierce advocate for Alzheimer's disease research, education, and caregiver support. Carl's legacy continues through his wife, Kathryn; son, Carlton McKee Greene, daughter-in-law, Carolyn Greene McKee, and granddaughters, Ailsa McKee Greene and Freya McKee Greene; and son, Matthew. He was predeceased by his parents, Myrtle Virginia Lewis and Emmett Carl Greene, and his former wife, Elaine. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at La Plata United Methodist Church in La Plata, MD at noon, with a visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. All are invited to stay for a reception immediately following. The service will be live streamed via the La Plata UMC YouTube channel; see https://www.youtube.com/@LaplataUnitedMethodistChurch. Please share your stories of Carl and share them often. Memorial donations may be made in his loving memory to the Alzheimer's Association (https://www.alz.org/), La Plata United Methodist Church (https://secure.myvanco.com/YQE6/campaign/C-161CM), or one of your favorite charities.
