Carly Hawkinson-Sohm, age 49 of Duluth, Minnesota passed away on August 17, 2024, after bravely fighting cancer. Born on October 10, 1974, in Forest Lake, Minnesota, Carly was the daughter of David and Catherine (Augustine) Hawkinson. She was a proud graduate of Forest Lake High School and later went on to the University of Minnesota-Duluth (go Bulldogs) and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where she pursued her passion for outdoor education. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Outdoor Education, minoring in French and Geography and master’s degree in Education. Carly embarked on a fulfilling career as an Interpretive Naturalist, working as a seasonal hire at great places such as St. Croix Scenic Riverway, Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Preserve, USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, Crex Meadows Wildlife Area. She landed her dream job with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and was placed at Gooseberry Falls State Park and later Jay Cooke State Park, where she found joy and purpose in educating others about the wonders of the outdoors. On May 13, 2017, Carly married her beloved husband, Reginald Sohm, at Gammelgarden in Scandia, Minnesota. Together, they made a home in Duluth, where Carly immersed herself in activities she cherished like hiking, kayaking, and playing the ukulele.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Audrey and Howard Hawkinson, Virginia and Albert Augustine; step-son, Donavan Micah Sohm. Carly's spirit will be cherished and remembered by her husband, Reginald Sohm; her parents, David and Cathy Hawkinson; brother, Neil (Emily) Hawkinson; nieces and nephew, Allie, Hunter, Alexis; step-children, Michael Kloti, Dylan Thomas Sohm, Ethan James Sohm, Priscilia Joy Sohm; step-grandson, Averyin Sohm Skow; many aunts, uncles, cousins and and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Elim Lutheran Church, 20971 Olinda Trail North, Scandia, Minnesota. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m., until the time of service at the church. Carly's legacy of passion for the outdoors and dedication to environmental education will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
