Carmelita Arias Tiña passed away in peace at her home on October 9, 2023 at the age of 90.
Carmelita was born on July 29, 1933 in Lingayen, the capital of the province of Pangasinan located in the Ilocos region of Luzon in the Philippines. She is the 3rd oldest of eight siblings (Rolando, Conrado, Carmelita, Caridad, Benjamin, Dominador, Oscar, Linda). She attended Baay Elementary and Pangasinan Provisional High School. She attended nursing school at North General Hospital where she received full scholarship. She passed the nursing board exam, scoring in the top 3, and became a Registered Nurse. She then practiced nursing at Far Eastern University where she later became head nurse.
While she was at Far Eastern University, one of her patients was an elderly gentleman named Paulino Tiña.Paulino's son Roberto fell in love with Carmelita, and they eventually got married on November 3, 1957 in Malate Church, Manila, Philippines. Together they had two sons and one daughter.
Carmelita went to the United States in 1976 and worked in two hospitals in Virginia before going back to the Philippines. Wanting a brighter future and more opportunities for her children, she and her three children moved to
San Francisco, California in April of 1978. Roberto stayed behind in the Philippines to close his business and followed a few months afterward. When Carmelita moved to the United States, she obtained her license as a registered nurse and worked at Laguna Hospital until 1998 when she eventually retired. She was loved by all that she worked with, and they also called her Manang Tina as she always had that motherly nature about her and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others.
Carmelita had a strong Catholic faith and displayed that faith more through actions than words. Her unconditional love for her husband and children was unwavering. She firmly believed in having a solid education as a strong foundation and in education being a right, not a privilege. She demonstrated kindness and compassion with everyone, whether they were family and friends she had known for a long time or new acquaintances that she would freely welcome into her house. Carmelita was a good swimmer, and she enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports and valued their health and wellness over any desire to win.
Carmelita is survived by her beloved children Albert (spouse Teresita), Marissa, and Paul (spouse Louise), grandchildren Andrew, Allan, Thomas (spouse Franzene), Adrienne (spouse Chris), Annika, and Gerard, great grandchildren Tristan and Theo, siblings Oscar (spouse Zenaida) and Linda (spouse Pablo), as well many nieces and nephews.
We miss you Mommy/Lola, but we know you're in a much better place now with Papa/Tata in heaven and that you are always looking over us. We will never forget the life you gave us, the cross you carried, as well as the joy and exuberance you always exemplified.
