Carmen Schiavo Obituary

Published by Boyd-Horrox-Givnish Funeral Home on Jan. 16, 2021.
Carmen "Moe" Schiavo passed from this life in January 2021 at the age of 91. He was cheerful through his last days and passed peacefully in his sleep at home. Only five or so months earlier, a health condition developed that slowed Moe's activity in his yard, home, and around town. Moe is survived by his beloved wife Doris, two loving daughters, four cherished grandchildren, and two dear sisters Connie and Mary. Moe graduated from Norristown High School and was the last remaining member of the school's 1947 Buzz Boys Basketball Team. The Norristown community was tremendously supportive of the team, turning out for the games and following the team in the sports column of The Times Herald. Moe also played on various other basketball teams, including YMCA and church teams as well as teams sponsored by Norristown businesses such as Zummo's Hardware. The YMCA was like a second home to Moe as he was there so often to play basketball. Moe was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Moe and Doris were a few weeks away from celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. In his earlier years, Moe enjoyed taking many road trips with his wife and daughters, and later on, many road trips with his wife and grandchildren. For several years, his grandsons filled his calendar with day, overnight, and longer trips to compete in junior golf tournaments. The granddaughters and grandsons appreciated their energetic grandparents who took them to many activities, events, historic towns, museums, parks, and family gatherings. Moe completed many home-improvement projects, in his own homes and the homes of his daughters and other relatives. He built garages, porches, a dining room addition, and a small stable for his daughter's horse. His family remembers him whistling while he worked and singing happy songs he may have learned from the "Sing Along with Mitch" show. Moe had been active in All Saints Episcopal Church, helping with church dinners, fairs, youth group outings and camping trips. Moe loved engaging in conversation at the coffee hours after church and at church events. Moe and his family often gathered with other church families for visits in each other's homes, restaurant dinners, outings, and camping. Maps, geography, history, and biographies were of great interest to Moe throughout his adult years. In recent years, Moe bowled in the men's senior league at Facenda Whitaker Lanes (Our Town Alley) and regularly spent mornings in conversation with new and old friends at Jem Restaurant in East Norriton. He enjoyed friendships with many neighbors on his street. Relatives and friends are invited to Moe's Life Celebration on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 from 9:15-10:00 am, followed by his memorial service at 10:00 am at Boyd-Horrox-Givnish Life Celebration Home of East Norriton, 200 West Germantown Pike. The memorial service will be live-streamed via the Boyd-Horrox-Givnish Facebook page starting at 10:00 am and the replay video will be available also on the Boyd-Horrox-Givnish Facebook page. Those attending are asked to continue adhering to current social distancing and mask requirements. Doris, I was so sorry to hear about Moe! I couldn’t have been blessed with better neighbors than the two of you. Moe was always ready to lend a hand. He would clear my sidewalks without being asked on those cold snowy days.
There’s a special place in heaven for people like Moe. God Bless you Moe.
May you Rest In Peace.
Love, Terrie

I loved his stories of Norristown back in the day. How dear a friend he was to me and my family. I'll always remember being Amtrak travel buddies while visiting Southern Pines NC when visiting Connie and Mary. Rest in peace Moe, and prayers and comfort for your family.

Knew Moe for the last 20+ years as the GREATEST neighbor anyone could ever have. Always helpful, always offering good advice and one of the truly "nicest" persons I have ever met. He will be missed.

I'm so grateful to have had so many years to spend with my grandpa - called "Pop-pop". I'll always remember the vacations down the shore as a kid with him and all the great stories he told about Norristown. He was such a sweet man - he will be so missed.
