Carmen Lee (Browning) Short, 84, of Royalton, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin.
Carmen was born on May 28, 1941, at home in Creek Nation located near Mulkeytown, Illinois to the late Wathen Lee and Martha (Butler) Browning. She was united in marriage to Roy Lee Short on December 29, 1962, in Royalton. Roy preceded her in death on March 3, 2005.
Carmen graduated from Royalton High School in 1959 where she was also crowned Homecoming Queen. She attended Methodist Church of DeSoto, Creek Nation Christian Church and Royalton Christian Church. Carmen loved raising her three boys and helping take care of all the neighborhood kids. She always had a meal prepared big enough for more than just her family. She loved watching her family play sports. Carmen loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To her, family was everything.
Carmen is survived by her two sons, Derek (Lisa) Short of Simpson, John Shannon Short of Royalton; four grandchildren, Parker (Rachell) Short of Zeigler, Tyler (Hannah) Short of Johnston City, Raleigh Short of West Frankfort, Roman Short, who is serving in the United States Army and stationed in Germany; three step grandchildren, Kody (Ali) Greenwood of Mulkeytown, Chelsey (Dillon) Turk of Marion, Raven Carter of Johnston City; two great- grandchildren, Liam and Austin Short; four step- great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Wade and Avery Greenwood, Brix Turk; sister-in-law, Cheryl Browning; nieces and nephews, Zachary Browing, Heather Dawn, James "Jay Bird" Harrison, Damen Ray Austin; cousins, Sandy, Patty and Donnie Butler.
Carmen was preceded in death by her parents, Wathen and Martha Browning; husband, Roy Short; son, Rory Short; brother, Lonnie Browning; cousin, Michael Gean Butler and brother and sister-in- laws, James and Carolyn Harrison, John and Ruth Short, Bud and Pam Austin.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Vantrease-Pyle Funeral Home of Royalton has been entrusted with the arrangements.
