Carmen Lucille Warren (Campbell), assembly line worker, caterer, clerk, salesperson, administrator, and educator, died on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at Spring Village at Pocono Senior Living Center in Pennsylvania. Carmen was 98 years old.
Carmen was born to parents Enos Roy and Vivienne Estelle Campbell in St. Andrew, Jamaica, British West Indies. Carmen was pre-deceased by her brothers Noel Gladstone and Kenneth Roy and her sister Gloria Elaine.
A woman who always strived to better herself, after graduating Alpha Academy, she joined the workforce but yearned for something more. In November 1949, Carmen immigrated to the United States. She worked several different jobs including catering and manufacturing. She met and married Felix Henry Warren in November, 1957 and focused her life on being a homemaker in East Orange, NJ. In 1959 and 1961, she bore 2 children - David Roy and John Thomas.
In 1964, the family moved to their new home at 43 Pleasant Avenue in
Montclair, NJ. Unfortunately, her life as a stay-at-home mom came to an abrupt end when Felix passed away in October, 1966. As a result, Carmen re-entered the workforce and had to learn how to drive. Her new 1967 Chevy II gave her great joy as she travelled around. She was employed at the French Shop on Bloomfield Ave in Montclair for several years but moved on to work with Arlene Scotland at the Wilkerson Center in East Orange. There she became part of the family and performed numerous tasks including receptionist and administrator. She worked at the Wilkerson Center for more than 25 years during which time she was able to see her sons graduate from high school, college, and start their own families. At 73, Carmen wasn't ready to retire and began working with Phyllis Rogers at Day Nurseries in Montclair. She believed in a good education, was a strict disciplinarian, and became the Enforcer when kids needed a little behavioral modification.
Family and friends were the most important to Carmen. Family in Jamaica, Canada, and the US were always at the front of her thoughts. She stayed in contact with all on a regular basis. Her brother and his wife, nephew and his family, were the center of her attention. She also talked with her in-laws and their families regularly. One of the biggest influences in her life were 6 women she connected with and started the T.H.E. Club. Aside from getting together for official meetings on a monthly basis, all were deeply involved with their family lives on a daily basis. They became "Aunts" to all of the kids and provided the opportunity for them to grow up with each other in this extended family. The T.H.E. Club travelled all over the world including Europe, Asia, and South America. Their ties and experiences kept them together for over 60 years. Her friends on Pleasant Avenue were another branch of her extended family. Over the years, Carmen became close with the Marquez's, Green's, Lawrence's, Jenkin's, Lewis's, Polo's to name a few. When she couldn't get out as often as she liked, daily calls to Annie Lewis across the street kept her up to date with all of the local news. Carmen was a rabid NY Giants and NY Yankees fan who would sit and watch games from beginning to end. Her passion for baseball went back to the Brooklyn Dodgers and she became
a NY Giants fan after marrying Felix. Aubrey Lewis provided her with a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet her all time favorite NY Giant, Phil Simms.
Carmen is survived by her son David, his wife Penney and their three children, Aaron, Sydney, and Felix, son John and his wife Dawn, her nephew Terry Campbell, his wife Angela and their
daughters Nicole, Cindy, and Christine, her sister in-law Emma Warren, her daughter Lorraine and her granddaughter Emma Grace, her sister in law Linda Bell-Warren, as well as many
family and friends who will miss her dearly.
It's comforting to know that Carmen's zest for life will be remembered by many with sincere
thoughts about her role in each of their respective lives.
