MASHPEE – Carol A. Belton of Mashpee passed away in the early morning hours of November 14, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer, with her loving daughter by her side. She was 69 years old. Carol was the daughter of the late Dominga M. (Pina) Mattos and Jack P. Mattos. Born and raised in Wareham, she devoted her life to caring for others, beginning her career after high school as a Certified Nursing Assistant. In 1991, she married the love of her life, Charles L. Belton, and together they settled on Cape Cod, where they raised their children and grandchildren.
Carol will be remembered for her heart of gold and her bubbly, outgoing personality. She was a true blessing to all who knew her-one of the most selfless people many ever encountered. A devoted woman of God, she spent countless hours leading the children's choir, directing plays, and ushering at the First Pentecostal Church in Mashpee, where she found her cherished brothers and sisters in Christ. Serving faithfully was her joy, and her light touched everyone she met. Carol was also a foster parent; there was never a time when she and Charles did not open their home. Their household was always filled with laughter, lessons, and an abundance of love-memories carried in the hearts of every child who entered their doors.
When she wasn't singing hymns, reading her Bible, or tending to children, Carol could be found in her craft room working on her next masterpiece. Many would say she had "gifted hands." Every creation-decorations for events, memorial pieces, blankets, and countless other beautiful gifts-was made straight from the heart. Though talented in many ways, her greatest gift was nurturing. She brought comfort to everyone around her, even in her final days.
Carol was the loving wife of Charles L. Belton and proud mother of Jason Rice, Tynisha Mattos, and Gregory Mattos. She was a dedicated grandmother to Quetila Rice, Jassenia Mattos, Jahniah Mattos, Treymari Reyes, Gemyni Mattos, Melahdey Mattos, Rjuan Harris, and Alicia Harris; and great-grandmother to Kylo and Jakobi Mattos. She is survived by her sister Marion J. Mattos, and brothers Paul Mattos, Jack Mattos Jr., Ronald Mattos, Carl Mattos, Anthony Mattos, David Mattos, and Michael Mattos. She was preceded in death by her brother John Mattos and sister Juanita Richardson.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, November 22, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Chapman Funerals & Cremations – Wareham, 2599 Cranberry Hwy. (Rt. 28). A funeral service will begin at 10:30 AM, with burial to follow immediately at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Wareham.
